The question is, when I go traipsing around the local scrappys on Monday morning how many different shades of glass should I expect to find on P38's?
Also how do I identify what shade is fitted to my car?

That is a shame, but lucky that big branch didn't land square on the roof, would have done a fair amount of damage!

Willow isn't even a great firewood, either!

No idea about the glass, I am afraid.

As stated above with the code, just let the insurance sort it out, seems to me a lot of hassle, its just the standard green Pilkington Sundym class also fitted to disco back in the late 90s and still available.

Just had another look at the damage, it got the roof alright. There are two scores down the whole length of the roof panel. I should be able to float those out with some stopper but the tailgate is for the scrap.

Insurance, hmmmm. Never made a claim in my life. I suspect its one of those situations where I could have done the job myself sooner than finish the nonsense paperwork. Fair suggestion though.

Thanks for the advice but thinking about it I will have to get a replacement upper tailgate anyway. That will probably come with glass and need repainting. After that a second hand piece of OS rear glass won't cost much, plus a bloke to come and fit it for a few notes, he might as well repair the chip in the windscreen while he's here. All in the glass alone will probably be around the cost of my excess and no faffing about on the phone

Its the paint that will be the killer. I'm thinking of going mad and getting the whole thing resprayed, get rid of all the scratches and electrolysis. In for a penny and all that. After all its an ill wind that blows no good, even if it does blow sodding great willow branches on top of your car!

Ouch! Nasty. Willow is prone to that sort of thing. It'll burn but it holds a lit of water so it needs a few years drying under cover before using.

fair chunk. Car did well. Good job no-one was in it.

love the username by the way.

No, Alan. It was my tree.Just another indication that I should get back out to "Las Islas". Trees don't fall on cars often out there.

"Good job no one was in it" Good job it wasnt anyone elses motor either. Then it definately would be an insurance job.

Had the username name long before the scandal and amendment is now long overdue, "operationyewtree" doesnt seem appropriate...... "operationwillowtree" has a ring to it, however...... sick lol

Check out your household policy Jim.

Is that a crease above the offside rear light?
If so that's nasty ...

Clearly there are two schools of thought on how to approach this and currently the "phone the insurance people" school has more support. Please dont think im being disrespectful by not taking your advice but perhaps I may be able to convince you to join my school.

This morning I went to a local scrap yard and purchased a decent upper rear tailgate and spend 20 minutes with a Stihl saw chopping out the bodywork around the OS rear window of a suitable scrap p38. After handing the friendly scrap dealer £25 I made my way home to phone a friend of a friend who happens to be a semi retired windscreen repair man. He agreed to call round sometime tomorrow afternoon and chop the side screen away from the body work I had just cut away and then fit the replacement side screen for £50. I then went out to replace my damaged tailgate with the newly acquired one.

By tomorrow afternoon the car will be at least watertight again. It will owe me £75 and about 2 hours work. Assuming my excess is going to be around £200, probably more knowing me, that gives me £125 to throw at bodywork repairs.

On top of that I very much doubt the insurance could have got the car repaired to the standard it will be in as quickly as Monday afternoon. They may have even removed it altogether and left me with some nasty courtesy car.

Has any of this persuaded you to join my school of thought?

Nothing at all wrong with that train of thought ... you knew a guy who could do the glass, you have access to a decent scrappy ....

See nowt wrong at all ....

For others it may be a different kettle of fish ... but that is life ...

I can see where you are coming from, BUT, it denies you the pleasure of the courtesy car. My record as it stands is 56 mpm in first gear and 8mph in top for a Nissan Micra. Beat that.:D:D:D

Beat that?

"56 mph in first gear and 8mph in top for a Nissan Micra" Off road in a Lanzarote hire car. Poor thing was mint on the outside when it went back to the airport. The under side was wrecked and I dont think any system on it was any longer capable of holding fluid.

Maybe I should phone the insurance. No doubt you fellas can think of some exciting experiments to torture a Skoda Yeti...........

Remember hiring a Fiat Panda:eek: many years ago, the hire company had removed a clip from the gear linkage so if you went off road you lost gear's because the linkage fell apart. I know because I was ragging it down a dirt track and it stuck in one gear. As luck happened around the next bend was.... a burnt out Panda!! Hand down the back of the engine and retrieved the said clip, put the linkage back together and gave it loads of stick.:D:D:D That'll learn them.
