Brakes suddenly stopped working

I'm new, hi!

The brakes on my freelander were fine until last night, when I had to press the pedal right down to get the car to stop. Frightened the life out of me.

Checked the brake fluid - it was empty. Topped it up and pumped the brake pedal a few times. I took it for a little drive and most of the time the pedal needs to go right to the floor. Sometimes it has the sponginess and stops quickly. Any ideas what's wrong with it?
 
Should think a rear brake has failed.

The pins holding the shoes in place rust and break which allows the shoe to move, the ram comes out of the slave cylinder and fluid escapes.

Check around the back wheels for fluid.

Remove wheels & drums and inspect.
 
If this is the case, it is probably best to replace the whole rear brake system - ie shoes, drums and cylinders. It is a surprisingly cheap and easy job to replace the bits - but you need to make sure they are installed correctly (right way round for example) - pictures of before you dismantle to compare against helps. You'll probably need to replace the pipes going to the cylinders as well as it can be difficult removing them from the cylinders without damaging them.
 
Thanks for replying so quickly. Yeah it's a freelander 1. No fluid around the back wheels.

I haven't got time to do the work - what do you think is reasonable to pay in a garage?

It could be a bust brake line. Like you scared me to death when i happened to me. Got AA to toe it to a place I thought wouldn't change much and was stung for £160 to replace a bit of brake line and top the fluid up :mad:.
 
This exact thing happened to me, ot was indeed the rear shoes had moved allowing the position to pop out. Was working in London at the time, cost me nigh on 400 quid to have both sides replaced. Had no choice as I was so far from home otherwise I'd have done it myself.
