Hi all,

Looking to do a brake system diagnosis/cross check followed by parts order:

2008 RR 4.2 Vogue SC
2009 RR 4.4 HSE

The bigger wheels & brakes on the Vogue feel heavier, almost like a faster tank on the road Cool

After a bit of reading, I see the below makes up the basics of the brake system, correct me if I'm wrong:

Discs (Rotors)
Pads
Sensors
Clips
Fluid
Lines
Hose
In car software check

2008 was recently at the dealer, they had no comment on the brakes, however I feel the pedal is way too soft, brake response is out of range and takes her a while to come to a stop. Occasionally I find my self opening the window and shouting get out the way! Good news is I'm a responsible driver….Also recent squeaks every now and then.

2009 came out of service not long back and was advised for front and rear pads replacement. Squeaky big girl.

Only picked up the 09 a few months back, the previous owner did advise to replace the brakes.

Aiming to stay as far away possible from the dealer, rely on enthusiasts, specialists on FFRR for support and guidance.

Hope to post up some pics on the aftermath.

Following the subject, if we could please start with the diagnosis first?

Apologies if this is a repost, the similar threads advised on seemed different.

Thanks,

Occasionally I find my self opening the window and shouting get out the way!

I often do that and my brakes work fine.

If the pedal is soft, the brake fluid probably needs bleeding, check pad wear first though !

Hi Maybe of help to you, S/C should have Brembo brakes, different pads and discs than the HSE, below is what I ordered for my 2 RR's from LR Direct, I went with mid range (cant remember the make but not **** part), happy with the products,

Also part numbers for the front suspension which you will need in the near future.

The part numbers you require are:-
2009 L322 S/C
Front & rear brake pads – SFP500070 & LR055454
Front & rear Brake pad wear sensor cable – SEM500050 & SOE500030
Front & rear wiper blades – DKC000040 x 2 & LR012047

2008 L322 HSE
Front & rear brake pads – LR019618 & LR055454
Front & rear brake pad wear sensor cable – SEM000012 & SOE500030
Front & rear wiper blades – DKC000040 x 2 & LR012047
Front n/s & o/s top ball joints – RBK 500210
Front n/s & o/s suspension arms – (lower) RBJ500920 x 2 (upper) LR018343 & LR018344
Front n/s & o/s arm bush – Will come complete with the arm
Associated bolts/nut for the above suspension parts – KYG000043 x 4 , RYH501100 x 20, RYP501170 x 8,

HSE 2009

So im at the garage, sourced original parts from a supplier close by, had them installed, just a replacement brake job as requested.

Drive the big girl, about 10% braking performance only ....Garage said give it a few hours, which I did and started to feel the braking performance increase and a day later back to normal but what a risky situation!

1) when replacing front & rear pads n discs can situation of low break performance be avoided?

2) I hear a resonance front left wheel, like a part is grinding with another, sounds like "MMMMMMMMM .."
once I hit the brake, noise disappears! interesting?

so now most of the time my foots on brake pedal standby mode and eyes wondering if pedestrians can hear what I hear

Went back to the garage, says your brakes are fine, sounds like a wheel bearing?

Could they have messed up during the brake replacements?
Is it a sticky caliper? Maybe a bit of greasing somwhere?

Took it to another friend of mine who runs a garage, shiwed me the front left pad and says small signs of uneven pad wear on the front left which leads to the disc being faulty, skimming can sort it out?
Also said if it was a wheel bearing , would be a constant noise ,so its not the bearing?

On top of it , All brand new original parts..

Hats on please, appreciate the support

Turns out to be a a disc skimming on the front left (manufacturing defect on the disc) , noise gone. Brand new brakes all set.

Hope the 2008 Vogue SC, full brake replace goes smooth.

Wonder if ill be lucky to have a manufacturing defected disc from brembo that needs skimming; doubt it.

2009 HSE
Ok so it wasn't disk skimming.. and That annoying noise keeps coming back. Really trying to understand what this noise is  ..any ideas any one…?

2008 Vogue SC, fluid changed and dealer noted the Brake Hose Recall, swapped out.. brake feels more responsive by about 80% , highly recommend everyone to check the brake hose recall. Pads and Discs soon.

2008 Vogue SC
Swapping out Pads front and rear, attached; Hella Pagid and sensors.
Daily drive, pad quality should suffice. Anyone tried these pads before?

2009 HSE
That annoying noise still coming back, when I hit the brakes it disappears, but somehow makes it way back, advised was a bearing that needs to be changed.
mmmMMMMMMMM, i could start a choir.:D

Appreciate the feedback.

2008 Vogue SC
Pad braking is fine, but getting a noise, hard to explain, something like closed mouth and humming from a constant high to low tone, if that makes sense? Mainly braking from acceleration at around 80 Km/h to a halt., thoughts, or just keep the volume up on the Harmon Kardon's :D

Ok so all the noises are gone, warn out discs thats all. New discs are in but now faced with what seems to be a temporary matter? After installing the Front and Rear Discs, took the big girl for a few acceleration runs/braking, 0-50, 0-70 , 0-100 , the third attempt I noticed the brakes were cooking, steaming if I may…Took her back, they checked the pads and discs, removed the wheel etc….I asked if it was probably because they didn't clean the discs before putting it on? I understand new discs come with a coating of some sort? It was the first time I noticed discs were not cleaned and they said its not required? Thoughts gents? (pics attached)

Brakes will always be less good when pads and discs are changed as they need to bed in for a couple of hundred miles/km before they will work correctly.

Discs have a protective cost of light anti rust fluid on them to stop them rusting in the box, you can clean it off if you like before fitting the discs but it will burn itself off very quickly during the first couple of pedal presses.

Brakes get hot, especially if stopping hard from 100mph.

Take it for a normal drive for an hour, avoid hard braking or high speed - keep the speed constant - then see if the brakes are hot - if they all are then brake pedal end may need some adjustment, if just one when is hot then that wheel may have a seized brake calipers or a bad wheel bearing.

NEVER EVER fit new discs WITHOUT cleaning the preservative off.

I have only even given them a quick wipe over on the braking surface with a clean rag or similar not a clean as such.

Do you mean clean as in wash them properly type clean?

I stand corrected, apologies.

*runs off to buy some degreaser.

Should be cleaned off properly with solvent. Thinners, petrol or the like. Same applies to clutch pressure plates. If it's a customer car it should be road tested to initially bed pads. Customer should be advised to brake early, NO harsh braking for first 250 miles. Unless in an emergency situation. Not to sit at lights with foot brake applied Etc. Or new discs mistreated can warp.

Okay I shall do that from now on, I consider myself educated.
I don't work on other peoples cars but if I ever do I shall give them that advice.

I can't recall reading about the cleaning in a Haynes manual or similar - it may be there - will check.

I didn't know about the clutch faces either, I just cleaned the flywheel with degreaser as it was a but mucky but the clutch itself came wrapped in a wax paper packet - I just fitted it straight, didn't notice any ill effects and it's done 1k since.

Cheers wammers

Standard practice to clean all preservative from discs, drums, clutch pressure plates. Anything that comes into contact with friction materials. ;);)

Duly noted.

Thanks for putting me on the straight and narrow without verbally abusing me like some on here do
