Guys,

I have a lot of travel on the brake pedal on me 1985 110. Pumping doesn't make any difference so its not air in the system, an the rear drums are all adjusted up nice. Anyone else seen this?

I was thinkin maybe master cylinder. The brakes do work OK but its lookin like they might fall foul of the reserve travel check in the MOT.

An Its been like it ever since i bought it (18months ago) so figure really should sort it now:rolleyes:

have you checked the fluid? have you bled it through? I would start by pressure bleeding the system and making sure the res is at the right level. It could also be the adjustment on the master cylinder.

You can adjust the free play on the brake pedals.

Undo the nuts that hold the master cylinder to the servo, gently pull the cylinder away and you'll see the plunger that actually pushes on the piston in the cylinder.

The end of it is threaded, and with the aid of a couple of pairs of pliers (the end of the plunger is a funny star shape) you can adjust the length of it, so take up the freeplay.

BE CAREFUL though... i was fiddling with mine and adjusted it slightly too far (only 1/2 a turn or so) and the brakes were binding slightly, drove a mile or so and they got so hot they stopped my 90! (expanded i presume)

Jim, I had this same problem on my recently purchased Lightweight. I was told there is a small port somewhere in the MC and adjusting it to far blocks this off and hence the flow of fluid. Thats how it builds up causing siezed solid brakes. The bite on the clutch is also causing me problems ATM so I think i will adjust that MC and see how it go's.

:confused:Guess it must have passed one MOT like it then?....probably m/cyl.....get OEM if you can afford it{some would say you cant afford NOT to!]:)

Well, I did the adjustment suggested by Jim and its now a lot better, brakes bite a lot higher up and none of the wheels binding, the brakes went through the MOT yesterday without a mention. Shame about the chassis though.......

Incidentally, the brakes did pass the previous MOT but with an advisory about the efficiency/reserve travel, so this seems to have been the right option, totally FOC:). May think about doing the MC at some point but that cost money......:(:(
