Hiya All,, Heres a strange one for you!!

The other day I changed my front pads on my '94 Disco V8 ES. The disc on the drivers side was quite rusty (Due to Landy not moving for a while (Starter Motor)), so I Took off the disc, and gave it a good clean up with a wire brush thingy on the and of my trusty Black and Decker, put it all back together in the fashion of Mr Haynes, and all went back together sweet,, but thing is, the replacement pads had a sensor wire, and the pads I took of didnt, (I know this has been covered in a previous post) and I have checked the passenger side, and there is no sensor on there either?!?! So how does the brake wear light know when to come on??? Is this some kinda Solihull Voodoo?? , anyway,, I also changed the pads on the drivers side, but left the disc on as it wasnt too bad. needless to say the brakelight is still on??!?, but the MAJOR puzzler is, I now have no 'Park' gear in the front wheels, at first I thought that somehow I'd cocked up the drivers side hub assembly and this might have caused it, but considering I only changed the pads on the passenger side, I cant understand how the Park is not working.
I know it worked before I changed the drivers side pads and cleaned the disc cos I relied on this to hold the wheels while I undone the nuts. But when I came to tighten them later, thats when I noticed that it wasnt working, and I know the passenger side worked for the same reason, but cant understand why its stopped working just cos I changed the pads?!?!?

So Basically,, does anyone know how to turn my brake warning light out, and/or where do the sensor wires go, and wheres my park gear gone??

reet furst orf if yer doing brakes , always! ah say, always do the same to both sides. next yer park gear on front wheels. fook nose what that means but i'l take a guess that you bin using 'p' to lock yer wheels up while tightening and undoing them. not a good idea!
did you do one side while the other was on the deck then when you did the second side did you then lift that aswell?

yer sensor wire might have bin stuck up out the way by the SPO

Well i was gonna do the disc on the other side too,, but sein as it wasnt to rusty and i wanted to make sure i didnt make any mistake i may have made on the other side so i left it be.
an yeah i did use 'p' to lock the wheels while undoing the nuts,,, but not for tighteing,, cos it didnt work by then! lol,,, didnt think this would cause a prob? seems im wrong? so whys it not a good idea? what does it knacker up?any idea how to fix it??
an yeah i did the drivers side while while nearside was on floor, and vice versa.

and the sensor wire? whats the SPA (i know im thick)

Cheers!!!!

What Mr Slob is telling you is

ALWAYS slacken wheel nuts before you jack up the wheel.

ALWAYS finish tighten wheel nuts after the jack has been let down.

I think Mr Slob would want to make sure you know what 'ALWAYS' means.

A parking pawl is a device fitted to a car's automatic transmission that locks up the transmission. It is engaged when the shift selector is placed in the Park position, which is always the first position (topmost on a column shift, frontmost on a floor shift) in all cars sold in the United States since 1965 (when the order was standardised by the SAE) and in most other vehicles worldwide.

The parking pawl locks the transmission's output shaft to the transmission casing by engaging a pawl (a pin) that engages in a notched wheel on the shaft, stopping it (and thus the driven wheels) from turning.

Most manufacturers and mechanics do not recommend using the transmission's parking pawl as the sole means of securing a parked car, instead recommending it should be used as a backup for the car's parking brake. Constant use of the parking pawl only, especially when parking on an incline, means that driveline components are kept constantly under stress, and can cause wear and eventual failure of the parking pawl. Replacement can be an expensive operation since it generally requires removing the transmission from the car.

It is also not recommended to use the parking pawl to stop a vehicle in motion. The pawl mechanism is not strong enough to stop a vehicle in motion or may not engage at all. Under that much stress, the pawl may break off in the transmission, leading to costly repairs.

thats the bones of it. if you try to turn a wheel while in park you run the risk of buggering yer auto box. and as you slackened yer nuts, using only park to prevent it from turning you was infact trying to turn the wheel.

so there is a chance you've fooked yer box

that makes sense, thats how i thought it worked,, know where you comin from, but if i would have busted a 'pawl' would it have made a noise and went suddenly?? and if that is the case, howcome it worked to undo the drivers side nuts, but didnt work to tighten them, then worked again to do the nearside nuts, then went again when i tried to tighten em?? cos like you say it locks from the transmission and not each wheel,, so im confused?

possible,,, but i think ive managed to turn each wheel while in 'p' for a complete rotation,, i know this may not be a full turn in the box,, but i dont think its catching at all,,, any other ideas?

sounds like yer have ferked yer pawl but it could be the tention spring on it, when yer moving and yer hit P it should go drrrrrrrr as the pawl bounces over the ratchet gear its the light spring that pulls the pawl down onto the teefs an if that breaks it wont work

Slob,, My old mans asked some chap up in Wolverhampton who apparently is in the know,, he reckons is coincidence that 'p' isnt working? Not sure if I can push it or not,, going to try that today.

Ill let you know in a bit!!

does anyone know if theres a way to adjust the pawl or tension spring or anythin?

OK Slob,, just tried pushing it,, and ,, no,, it wont move,,, so I dunno if its mended itself or if its just locking the rear wheels,, gonna jack it up in a bit and see if the front wheels are still turning,, might be a intermittant thing?

Are your brake lights working alright? were they the right pads for your car? might be worth checking with LR to see if yours is supposed to have wear indicators.

Riggaz

no G-man,,, the handbrake was off when i pushed it,, and wouldnt move,, so 'P' seems to work on the rear wheels at least,, still not jacked the front up again yet tho,, do it later!

And Riggaz,, Ive sorted the light yesterday,, it seems its one of those which works off the brake fluid level,, and i had some fluid in the float.. so I got my light off now,, Cheers!!!

Just gotta suss this park thing?!?!?

Ok,,, seems its gonna be one of them things we'll never know,,, 'P' is working on all wheels now?!?!? wierd eh?
