Brake fluid

Afternoon peeps

Treated myself to some much needed extended brake hoses

Whilst fitting I want to bleed through all new fluid as it could do with a change any ideas how much fluid is needed for a 300tdi 94 defender 90 no abs.

Also is there any advantage go upgrading to 5.1 over dot 4 or should I keep with dot4 ?

dot 4 or 5.1 whatever is cheapest. it's an increased boiling point which you won't hit with a defender unless you drive like a complete loon

Dot 4 it works available everywhere
1 litre should be more than enough
Use a syringe with a short section of rubber hose to suction out the reservior before bleeding makes job much quicker

cheers guys this job has been delayed as my transfer box sunday decided it had enough of moving and seized on the a34 on route to Beaughlie how ever spell that sort out.

+1 on dot4. I use Castrol exclusively - had a cheaper DOT4 fluid eat my braking system several years ago and now I flat-out refuse to use anything but.

sounds odd. just make sure it's glycol based and you'll have no issues.
