Coming to a roundabout and ....no brakes! After regaining composure we came to the conclusion it was the ABS pump and had it replaced, drove it around for two weeks roughly and then ...no brakes! We then were told it was the EGR(?) unit.(Under the glove compartment).Drove it about for 2 or 3 days then...no brakes. It has been suggested we change the brake fluid completely instead of just topping it up. Any more suggestions gratefully received.

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation, they are talking about the ABS ECU, if that fails you will still have brakes.
Check the relay for the ABS pump, a know failure item. Even if the ABS pump fails, you should still have some braking although not very effective and requiring a very hard push. If your car is an early one, it may be failure of the brake modulator, a small platic disc fails leaving you with no brakes, it's a well documented failure identified by a click when braking. Can be fixed witha kit from a guy in OZ if you can DIY, otherwise a replacement modulator.
PS.completely flush the system and refill with new fluid using the correct bleeding proceedure as in RAVE, it may just be water in the old fluid boiling.

Well that's good to know! Mine's a MY 1998.

How loud is this click that tells of impending brake failure?

It's going to make the M3 a bit more exciting!

Instead of topping it up op!

You obviously have a leak sort it when you fluid gets to low the pipe with the leak can't feed that cailiper no more as its run out unlike a normal car if you have a leak the abs pump will just pump it out every time the ignition is on.

It's not just an audible click, you can feel it through the brake peddle apparantly:eek:
I think the metal discs in the modulator were fitted when it went to 4 wheel TC, but not totaly sure about that.
