Hi all, looking for some advice. I'm trying to replace my front discs and pads as the old ones are down to the steel. I've been trying to remove the caliper for about an hour, and have just stripped the top caliper retaining bolt. I've managed to remove the brake line to get a clear shot at it, but now I'm a bit stuck. I've used a socket that's got the multi teeth, not a flat sided one, but it's still as round as a pound. Help!!

Why do they have to use those kind of bolts? Clearly they're going to be harder to extract as the surface is going to be inherently weaker? If I can remove it, is there any reason why I can't replace it with a proper flat sided one??

I allways try to use a ring spanner(multi toothed)on the caliper &stub axle bolts, i find sockets seem to slip of to the side,i personally dont see any reason you couldnt use a hex bolt as long as its same length, try hammering a smaller size socket on the rounded nut and gently heating the caliper

Thanks for your help guys. I'm going to try walloping a socket on first. If that doesn't work it'll have to wait until I get the welder for the other bits to be ready. Got to love Land Rovers.
I was talking to a mate up in Buxton today. He restored his series 2 when he was just 16, and still loves it today. He said that they are a love hate relationship, when you've got to fix it, you hate it. About 10 seconds of driving, you love it again. He's right!
