Bouncy transmission uptake

Since having my disco 1 I've noticed it's got a lot of transmission backlash. Like most other land owners I've just adopted a gentle clutch foot. But being this as my first land rover I don't know if this is normal....

When I take my foot off the accelerator swiftly, the transmission seams to bounce back a few times before just steadily decelerating.

From what. Can see most of the free play is in the front diff with not a lot in the back diff.

I think they all do it to some extent, some worse than others, and it's a function of so many joints and bearing surfaces in the drivetrain, and bushes in the suspension all working against each other.

Might be worth taking the props off and having a look at the diff pinion bearing, backlash etc

However, It's unlikely to be just one thing to fix though, and will more likely be an accumulation of a little slop in everything!!

Check the rubber doughnut between the rear propshaft and axle. These are prone to breaking up and causing the symptoms you describe.

Donut is fine was only replaced recently with a good make one. There is a lot of play in te front diff. And I wouldve thought a lot in the tbox being on 210k now. If its normal I shan't worry, just concerned it was something else


On the other hand now getting a loud bang/clunk if I stop sharply just as I come to a halt. Rear a frame ball joint? Bushes are fine on it and the gater looks in good condition..

I had alot of free play in my front diff, first thing i replaced was the drive flanges that bolt to the front hubs, that got rid of some of it. i know my diffs need to be dialed back in again. The backlash in the diffs should be between 0.07mm-0.11mm. also you have the c.v's that may have play in them. Also worth checking the prop uj's. Lastly knackered swivle pin bearings can give you a nice clunk. Might also be worth checking the front radius arm bushes as at that sort of millage they may need replacing if not done already. I've just fully polybushed mine. Made alot difference. Downside of fixing a knock,bang,clunk, is that you will find another that the first one was hiding

If you still have the rubber doughnut I would change to the 200 prop and diff for the sake of 80 pound will save you a lot of hassle.

Soon as this donut goes I'll get a 200 prop. Already got the flange.

Swivel bearings are defiantly shot even though I did them in December...

Took last shim out today and still got shakey steering.

Just polybushed the front too.

Gonna get new front shocks too
