Looking at the clean engine bay and the shine. He has used a spray on the engine etc. I wonder if the sports air filter is clogged with a engine vanish. I think you can wash that type out and redo them with the K&N special oil. I have a diesel and since the tank pump was replaced I have gained power and economy 2.5mpg. Is the fuel pump making a loud buzz ? When they start to go they get noisy, sounds like a hive of bees in a tin can.

If you read the post

"I took a bit longer as i cleaned everything before it went back on. "

NB the K&N was on it when i got, and if you notice.. it has a twin battery system, so the OEM Air intake wont fit.

And no. no issues with the K&N either. (neither on both of the Porsches, or both of the P38's)

No problem.

I took a bit longer as i cleaned everything before it went back on.

WOW!!!!!!!!!! I wish you never showed me this,, I want this... Amazing

Ok then..

Nitty gritty

If she/ he has no rust on sils etc then whatever engine trouble you av is NOTHING to worry about..really nothing..cost of another engine is fexk all compared to work in rust remidy..

Me..i would ignore all Po had said and go for full service and tune up..compression should be 150++ across all cylinders..if not i me personally would pull heads replace cam and lifters (GEN OE ONLY ON LIFTERS H180 cam)
Heads off to inspect bores..easy job if doing can anyway..

LEAVE CAR AS IS re dash and interior unless like me making a street rod ..hard to soft dash is a major job. Fitting p38 seats requires cutiing and welding.. ( sally runs just that..ruby runs M3 seats which fit better) would not fit p38 seats again..bmw rules!

You can get GOOD leather seats for classoc for £100 !!search ebay OFTEN!!

So ..whatever grief engine gives dont fret! If you got a rot free classic you on to a winner..leave as standard for £££ in the future
Rebuild engine rather than replace.. That way keeps numbers oe and you know its good!

Good luck

Oh forgot

Check stupid things too.
Air filter blocked exhaust blocked..colour of plugs (ie enough fuel, blocked fuel lines)
Fuel filter etc...
Trans brake not binding on
And anything else one can think of..

Excellent advise all round Zen :)

Thanks guys,, there is almost no rust at all, I am well impressed with how clean it is underneath and all round body work,, I will not attempt soft dash change over, my m8 works for a leather factory and can get me a full cattle skin so I think I am going to cover top dash with leather,, as for interior I want heated electric/power seats and would like nicer door cards, I have a guy who has immaculate brown interior but he wants £700 for it. The car has now been moved to a garage with a mechanic who has lots of experience with the 3.5 EFI.. I just bought a pair of overhauled cylinder heads on ebay for £50. I had another compression test done today (cold) and all readings were under 150psi. I also tried a different maf and it made no difference but cant tell if it was working in the 1st place. I just want someone to diagnose the problem then I can save up and get it fixed, not knowing is what gets me. I know I will get there eventually.. All mechanics who have looked at it agree it is over fueling... You guys are a huge help.

Hi guys,, Rangie has been in the same garage for a few weeks now and due to staff problems ect I have only just got news today,,
and it is good news , the guys has fixed it, it was the ECU under the drivers seat was giving false readings and was over fuelling the engine. I am picking it up tomorrow and cant wait, Not been told how much yet, the guy changed sensors x2 , checked all hoses ect , checked timing , checked air mass meter, then checked ECU,, swapped it with one I got on ebay and it fixed it, new set of plugs as the other ones were knacked due to the abuse they had taken.. THANK YOU ALL for your help and advice,, I hope someone will make good use of this thread,,, now I can start working on her at last.. Deano
