First time buying a Land Rover defender as only 21 , starting the restoration and full rebuild this month . Paid £2500 what’s everyone’s opinions . It’s got a TD5 engine and it’s 1986

Im no Expert but it looks good to me, seems a decent price too. Good Luck with your rebuild. I am doing the same on a 110 1987, Like I say I am no expert first time ive done anything like this, to be honest I wouldn't have got as far as I have without the help from people on this forum, still got a long way to go though. Im not far from you, your welcome to come and have a look at mine anytime.
 
To be pedantic it is not a defender at 1986 it is just a 110 :D

Have you got some pictures of the engine bay and dash? To retro fit a td5 is not an easy or cheap job into an older vehicle. So would Be interested to see how they have done it. What gearbox does it have fitted (where is reverse gear)? 2.5k is cheep for a Land Rover, without wishing to sound pessimistic, what is wrong with it to mean the price was so low?

Enjoy the rebuild. My dream is to have a workshop and space to strip mine and rebuild. Next house...

Quite possible to do everything on a landrover outside. In some ways it is easier, the light is better for ageing eyes.

A hard surface to roll engine cranes and trolley jacks around is more helpful than a roof.

What's it like underneath? The bodywork looks nice and straight. What's the bulkhead like? Again I'd like to see pictures of the engine bay. A TD5 in and '86 110 an uncommon conversion, normally these were retro fitted with a 200tdi or 300tdi.
 
Good price as above I've done everything to mine out on the street. Lots of photos of the rebuild please. LRdirect.com and a parts manual are your friends.
 
I have a new back door to put on , it’s getting some mechanical work done next week and everything checked at my cousins garage , then needs a bit of welding but that’s it’s . Has any one got a bull bar for the front for sale cheers

It looks like it needs a new rear crossmember. Although looks to have already had one (td5 version fitted rather than original). What other chassis problems are there, have you fully checked undernieth it all?

  • Offside Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength centre chassis (5.3.6 (a) (i))
  • Offside Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength chassis (5.3.6 (a) (i))
  • Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength crossmember/backpanel (5.3.6 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Front Wheel bearing has excessive play (5.1.3 (a) (i))
  • Offside Front Wheel bearing has excessive play (5.1.3 (a) (i))
  • Offside Front Drag link end ball joint has excessive play (2.1.3 (b) (i))
  • Nearside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded (1.1.11 (c))
  • Offside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded (1.1.11 (c))
Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):
  • Offside Rear Brake pipe inadequately clipped or supported (1.1.11 (d) (i))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
  • Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced

Hi dag mate everything’s getting fixed before I start the cosmetics all welding and structural work and mechanical will be fixed to brand new standard
 
Be interesting to peak under the bonnet, a Td5 retro into an old One Ten is rare.

Looks a decent project to start off your life of Landy ownership with, there will be a list of things to fix before a bull bar;)

Don’t be shy to ask questions, be prepared for plenty of advice and banter in equal measure.....
 
Thanks for the reply mate hope ur build goes as good as possible . Where you getting your parts from ?
I use Paddocks mostly, they are very reliable and cheap. If I'm in a hurry for anything there's a local Landy Dealer near me, bit dearer but Handy, open on a Sunday morning too.

On closer scrutiny, that looks like a 110 Td5 of 1999/2000 vintage but with an older ID. Check the Chassis number if you can....
