Out of curiosity - what's the expected life time of these? Particularly those provided/fitted by Ashcroft?

With the 'donk' I have its looking likely that mine is on the blink; hard acceleration brings it on so I don't do it. The gearbox was replaced with a recon Ashcroft unit at the start of 2009 (the full works including plate, vc etc) so I'm a bit surprised that it needs doing really.

a recon gearbox does not include a recon transfer box. Any oil in it?

This weeks job is to go through all the fluids and check; top up and/or drain and refill as required! :)

As a side note, should drain and filler plugs be replaced as a matter of course along with the seals/orings?

I've seen horror stories of them snapping and such like!

No history with my t/f box ever having work so guess its on 153k as is the body no donk or owt silent as anything

Some guy on the other RR site claimed once tightened he snapped it and had to drill it out.

Too tight I guess!
