mates just got an s reg diesel theres a lot water in the toolbox area.
is this common? if so haw do i cure it?

only ever had 110 or series or disco so dont know much about them.

Its really common on the early ones , not so much on the later ones.

10 minute job to take the rear section of the carpet out, then get a hosepipe and water test it to see where the water is coming in.

Probably requires a new taildoor seal as stated by Litch, though these arent a 10 minute job to fit properly as they are bonded in at the top.
 
Had new door and window seals fitted some months ago which cured the leaks but the interior of the tool box still becomes damp with plenty of condensation on the underside of the lid. Some of the many threads and posts suggest this is caused by the constant temperature change due to the silencer being mounted directly below the toolbox, it could be that the only "cure" is, as previously suggested, to vent the toolbox by drilling the base.
 
easiest and cheapest is to simply remove the rubber, then refit it. pick a warm day, or leave it in the sun a bit to warm up so it becomes flexible.

when you refit it, it goes back slightly differently and so seals again.

Have successfully done this twice now, once to mine and once to another. no problems so far.
 
The taildoor seals are bonded in unless your talking about vehicles with removable hardtops.

I think if it were purely down to condensation and temperature change then all freelanders would have fish tanks in their stowage box.

I personally would just spray it with a hosepipe and see where it leaks. Easiest to do with carpet removed. I've seen various occasions where people have replaced window regulators and not changed the watershedder causing water to leak in through the door itself.

Can only speak from my own experience but the new seals don't leak and the carpets are dry so can't think of any other way my toolbox still gets wet even when the weather is dry.
 
Mine is drilled, plastic coated (available from Frost Restoration in brush-on tin) & the whole floor was then waxoyled. Next I got an original Landrover bootmat off ebay for £35 to cover the floor with though I had to leave it for a couple of weeks till the waxoyl dried. Also before waxing, ran a bead of silicon sealer across the floor from side to side to prevent any water from going anywhere other than down the toolbox cubby & out the drain holes.
Been so successful that when my dad had a similar problem with his mk1 Rav boot carpet getting soaked & stinking the car out, I bought some chequerplate style rubber matting & we did the same to his. Because his car doesn't have a cubby well we just drilled a couple of drain holes at the lowest point in the boot. He opted not to waxoyl his though due to the smell that lasts a couple of weeks till it cures but he has had no problems since either.
 
Drilling holes or pushing out grommits is only a way around the symptom and does not cure the problem. Check the old seal, fit a new one if necessary and all sorted.
My wife's TD4 doers not suffer moisture, damp or water in the box so why should yours?
