Bonnet Gas Struts

Hi All
replacing bonnet. How do the gas struts come off beyond brute force & ignorance ?

Rave's diagram suggests twist & pull : tried that : maybe I'm just not forcing enough.

Rave doesn't mention that there's a sprung washer/circlip round the base at the outside of the strut. There's a slot at the top of it into which you insert a screwdriver and pop out the circlip : keep your hand round it or you'll never see it again. Base of gas strut then lifts off easily .
To refit, insert a pair of circlip pliers to open clip enough to fit onto base and push.
