Freelander 1 Bonnet cable snapped

My bonnet cable snapped today. Please, what is the fastest way to relase the catch?
Can it be done from below the car with the belly pan removed? Or should I cut through the grille to obtain access to the latch lever? I made an archive search and looked through previous threads but I did not really get the clear picture of what to do...

This is the easiest way, I think: Pry the plastic grille down sufficiently to make room for an 10 mm spanner to unscrew the two bolts that secure the bonnet part of the latch.
