I was reading on some Land Rover Magazine, that BMW V8's actually can take a standard land rover gearbox...

Can anyone explain this phenomenon please...and which bmw v8 models actually match rover gearboxes please.

Thanks :)

Not standard LR gearbox, but some BMWs used the ZF4HP22/24 box in a RWD configuration. This would mean that with the appropriate 'front end' off the ZF box in the donor car you could mate a BMW engine to ZF auto box in an LR.

The alternative would be to swap 'tail ends' to make the BMW RWD box into a 4WD box that links to the LT230 transfer case.

IIRC there is a user on here that has done similar in a 90 for comp safaris. And I have also heard of one Discovery with a BMW engine retro fitted.

I had a 1989 bmw 325i witht he 4hp22 in it , the engine was the bmw coded m20 2.5 straight six, and excellent engine with 171 bhp on tap and gave me 24 mpg. the engines are tough too but you need to make sure you change the cambelt early at every 30k miles.

i have a 1990 bmw 735i that i want to use the gearbox from to put in my 110 td5 defender does anybody know what parts i need ?

Beware certain model years of older BM V8's. High sulpher content of UK unleaded caused much grief with the 'nickasil' coating of the bores, resulting in replacement blocks. Not sure of the lumps effected, but worth bearing in mind.

Tell me what engine code it s you have in it , it should be the old m30 3.5 straight six 12 valve. if it is you are ok there wont be a nikasil problem.

You will need to change the 'tail' housing on that box as it is RWD and the ZFs that mate to the LT230 transfer box have a slightly different setup. Personally I would get a ZF box out of a D2 and use that.

Additionally you will need a Compushift to control the gearbox. PM for further information with regard to this.
