Blue smoke

Hi all hope you all have a merry Christmasand a happy new year hopefully better thanthe last one anyway back to the job in handthe oil leak and blue smoke today cleanedeverything off and cut the overhang on thehead gasket so I could see better and ran ituntil normal temperature on tick over offbut when I rev up blue smoke checked outwere the oil was coming from ok so Ithought I would do a compression test

So after that ran it again and checked for oilleak and with the sun shining on the back ofthe cylinder head I could see a little bubbleof oil now what the best thing to do take thehead off to investigate or could it besomething else any ideas much appreciated thanks

Compressions are quite evenly balanced. The smoke could be caused by a number of different things, and a high mileage Defender engine always tends to smoke a bit.
The oil leak, depends on how bothered you are about it, and if you think it will MOT.
You could try a rocker box seal, they are cheap and easy to fit, you could change the head gasket, that isn't a huge job either.
Or you could just leave it, and check and top up, regard the odd drop of oil as free bulkhead preservative.

Valve stem seals would be my guess for the blue smoke

Running up to temperature on tick over is not the same as taking it for a good drive. Do that and you may well find the blue smoke goes away on the whole. Try and see how much oil is lost and go from there. I like bulkhead preservative.

A good long hard run before MOT emissions test will help get through that as well.

Hi thanks for your response sorry I didn’t mention it’s a rolling chassis I didn’t want to go any further in case I had to strip the engine down
Just wondering if there any tests I can do to check if it’s the head gasket / piston rings etc much appreciated

Another vote for valve stem seals. Not a bad job - can be done with CH on anorl.

You can pretty much strip that engine down and rebuild it in situ anyway.

And to assess the likelihood of other engine problems, we need a lot more information.
Like, mileage, what you know of the service and use history of the engine, where and when you got it, and pictures, so we can assess the general condition of the engine, and the quality of the installation.

What engine is it?
Does the blue smoke smell of burnt oil or does it smell of diesel?
For burnt oil:
If it is piston rings it is likely to smoke al the time, especially under load.
If it is valve guides it should smoke on start up and clear.
If it is a turbo, oil could be leaking past the seals.
For diesel;
It could be unburnt fuel from a stubborn start-up, bt it should clear quickly.
It could be unburnt fuel due to the fuel pump timing being slightly out.
It could be over fueling from the injector pump being out of adjustment.

That is a lot of smoke. Does it smell of diesel, or oil?

Engine doesn't seem to rev up very cleanly either, which might indicate a pump timing issue.

Any pics of the oil leak?

I concur, having been wrestling with my diesel pump timing, pump timing or timing belt a tooth out would be my thoughts

Could be a few things. Pump timing, fuel pump overfuelling, blown injector nozzle.

I think we get the idea. That's not good either.

In the morning, start it up again, put your hand over the exhaust, and then come back and tell us if it smells of oil or diesel.

Where did you get the engine from, and what do you know of it's previous history?
