since owning my defender 300 tdi,its always belched out blue smoke from cold and run lumpy, now the smoke being blue i assumed the valve stem oil seals were fooked as the problem goes away when warmed up,i changed the head for one that did not smoke in the disco it came from, however problem was the same,no obvious wear on the bores of mine so i ignored the problem as its minor in my view ,anyway, timing belt replaced yesterday, pump timing was found to be out,put right,no more blue smoke,i am now confused big style as i thought fueling issues would be black smoke not blue, however problems gone and i now have a much better running defender

Diesel smoke can be all colours, people always quote the colours as gospil but its not always so.
