Blown Turbo

Folks

I have recently bought a 1998 Land Rover Defender 90 Hardtop and straight away appear to have blown the turbo. The Landy has 143,000 miles and is due a timing belt change. I suspect I should just go ahead with a full engine rebuild as plan to offroad and drive it pretty hard. Has anyone any suggestions of my best line of attack??

Body work needs some attention also - a bit of rust on bulkhead around vents and rust to main body around joins to hardtop. Do I do limited work to keep it going or full respray considering its age?? Generally in good order... I am based outside Belfast so any local ideas would be appreciated. I am currently stratching my head as to the best line of attack...

Check the engine as they suffer from cracked head and pistons

A loss of torque and a distinct whizzing turbo brought me to this conclusion, but I will check! Thanks

Oh, and loads of smoke under throttle! Nursed it home and grabbed the reliable Audi!

I'd just fix the turbo myself (assuming that's your problem, and it does seem likely), you need to drive it a while to get to know what needs work and what doesn't.

Buy a turbo repair kit. Good as new for fifty quid.
EASY job. Haynes spanner rating ..... ? Now let me see .....

Ah someone has done what i want to do ,rebuild a turbo ,what turbo have you done and where did you get kit from.

Garret T2 25s usually, and the kits came from Lucas, Europarts and so on.

Dead easy to do. Every last bit needed is in the kit, including all the little bolts and clamp plates, E clips, and all for about £50.

Starting the engine up first time is exciting! WILL IT WORK?????

Come to think about it I have one of those kits in stock, but where is it?
Will hunt for it tomorrow.
Definitely for a Garret T2-25 though. Is that what you need?

No I don't but Google < turbo repair kits > pages from the UK ...

You'll locate a kit in minutes,

Try to get a genuine Garret full kit and not some DIY one.

Thanks for the advise re the turbo kit. It's a second car (well I drive it more than my Audi as more fun) so can spend the time pulling it apart!
