Once did one with out taking off the ird never again.
It is a lot easier with the ird off, has the turbo let go big time as if so you will need to strip out the intercooler and all the pipe work and steam clean it all as if there are any particals left in then you run the risk of a damaging the new turbo.

Started with a small whistle, then a grating noise, now blowing smoke out of exaust and no power.Been quoted £450 for recon unit, you no any places that may be cheeper?

Bearing and seals have failed, when was the crank case breather last changed as that can cause it to fail.
You do need to find the reason why the turbo to let go to correct the reason prior to replacing it.
Bad news is even doing it yourself with the price of turbo
and parts you will not get much change out of £600

Got some one else to do it in the end, brand new Garrett turbo, fitted £900. Not bad as Landrover wanted £1700, dont know where they get there prices from, must just pick one out of the air, robin tossers. Thanks for your comments anyway.

It would be a good idea to put a new crankcase filter on as the foam filter can become hard when cleaned that way. Is it worth having a problem when £30 will avoid this problem.

Your probably right, what do you think to the modified BMW part, some say they have problems fitting it and have to make a few minor adjustments, some say it fits fine, you got one?

It's easy, only requires a notch if it doesn't fit right... read the threads about it, its covered. Well worth it.
