East midlands,
My disco has decided to turn into a steam engine:mad: running hot no heater, steam out the exhaust. Strangely very little loss of power:(

Oh yea water pooring from under head gasket:(

My guess is that I am getting my spanners out this weekend. Was hoping to be working on th series :(

Or does anyone think radweld will work or even worth a try?

I dint think rad weld would take the heat of the cylinder head! :( anyway its ****e gets everywhere it shouldn't! get your spanners out you know you want to! ;) ive got to! :(why should i be the only one! sorry lost it there for a minute!:D

Good luck. Every time I've had the steam problem it's been a cracked head(no I don't think I'm that unlucky, just quite old and I've had a lot of very cheap motors). Course in those days you could get a scrap head for a quid and fit it in an hour and a half. Nowadays you need to pay a mechanic two months' pension. Bloody progress. Anyone else remember when petrol was less than two and six a gallon?

Ah but in them days it was REAL jumpers. Made of wool. You don't get much wool nowadays. Good job they've learnt how to turn sheep into biodiesel (yech!). Now I remember when diesel was REAL diesel.... (dissolves into incoherent muttering and goes off to see if his new head's been fitted yet..)

Well the head is now off :) no other damage from what I can see either which is a bonus.

Must say a thanks to Hucknall Landrovers for supplying the gaskets.

:D Well al back together now:D Done about 10 miles in it, all seems good. Heater seems to be a lot better than before:D

Can anyone recommed a milage to recheck the tappets?

1 week, 1 month 500 miles??

How did you get on with your HG replacement. It looks like I have the same problems as you mention ion the first post except no visible leak and no steam. But pressurising the cooling system. Easy job? what are the pitfalls?

Easy enough job, just need a head gasket and a exhaust/inlet gasket. Also I found you need a bloody long extension bar to get to the turbo mounting bolts from undrneath. Same with all jobs on the engine make sure everything is clean I.e gasket face before refitting.
Don't know about the 300tdi but on the 200tdi I could have done with a disc with degrees on because the tightening sequence is 30lbft the a further 30 degrees then another 30 degrees. They end up being ****ing tight.
Sholud do it in a day :D

Thanks guys, thats just the sort of thing I was after! I am fairly certain that its a case of HGF now but am going to let a local garage confirm it for me. I will probably do it myself. I have access to NDT equipment so will be ablt to check the head for fracturing etc myself but may well consult a specialist.

Interestingly, the thread on head removal seemed to imply it qwasnt neccesary to get new bolts?

order a gasket set tonight fer delivery tomorrow, get up early on Sat morning and you'll have it done by lunch time (with an extra few hundred quid in yer wallet)

I am very tempted in fact spanners already out from:
P gasket
water pump
radiator
etc etc

But I would still feel a bit better and confident if I was told by a garage who had done a proper test that it was a HGF. Besides I need the car even if its only good for local trips.
