my starter motor decided to give up the ghost on my 200 tdi after goin in a lot of water . so i changed it for the one off my old td engine which was fine back in the summer. well the td starter does work but it makes like a loud grinding noise. but NOT a metal on metal grinding noise . until the engine starts then its fine. being a tdi it dosent take much cranking to start but the noise dosent sound healthy . could it be a bad earth from starter to chassis causing it IE THE STARTER ISNT GETTING A PROPER CONNECTION I DONT KNOW. any one care to enlighten a novice

since the starter motor is earthed through a point on the gearbox onto the battery if it is an earth problem its because the two mating surfaces are very dirty, were they?

i had trouble earthing my bodywork to the battery, so i ran two earth straps from the chassis to the gearbox, right next to the battery connection and hey presto! no earth faults....

If none of this fixes it, take it off and strip it down as best you can, if you go in water a lot the solenoid will need cleaning a few times a year, unless you like replacing starter motors....:D
