I've recently been hearing a sort of whining coming from the fuel tank/pump. Today I fired the motor up and it started okay but the slowly sort of cut out and wouldn't get going again.

I'm not sure if there is some dirt in the tank from a fuel container I borrowed off my mate the other week. I have checked the fuel filter and it seems okay.

Any suggestions?

Cheers.

Run it with the fuel filler cap only on loosely, it might be the breather. Blow all the airlines out, towards the tank! Check or change any filters/sedimenters in the fuel lines. Check all fuel line connections for tightness and especially the fuel lines themselves for cracks at the line entry and exit points from the fittings.

Thank you, will try them all and let you know how I get on.

Most likely fuel pump on its way out

Filter heads corrode, get porous, can get air in system in some cases

FPR can leak/fail doubt it's cause of your symptoms but worth checking for diesel leak down back of engine.

Injector seals are common but don't know if they would cause your exact symptoms. Check engine oil for excess level on dipstick/unusually thin, diesel smell.

My money's on fuel pump mate, same symptoms on my previous disco td5. Stuttering under load, cutting out then eventually not starting

Edit think you have to drop the tank to get to fuel pump on defender, no access panel like disco 2. Some cut a hole to access and install their own hatch
