Bleeding air lock

Hi
I know this sounds basic but what is the best way to bleed my water system on 2001 td5 im a bit of a basic diy so help running through whole procedure would be a good help, the cars header tank cap needed replacing as faulty lost water through overflow i believe got new cap but would like advise as to how to do correctly

You could download a copy of RAVE - Its all in there.

Undo the bleedscrew in the top hose
Pull the header tank up out of its mounting and raise it 4"
Add 50/50 mix of OAT coolant and water until it flows nicely out of the bleedscrew with no air bubbles
Check for leaks
Bleed it a bit more for good measure
Fit bleedscrew and tighten loosely
Start car
Check again that there are no air bubbles around bleedscrew
Top up to level
Fit header tank cap
Refit header tank into mounting
Run car up to temperature
Check for leaks whilst coming up to temp
Allow to cool
Check level
Top up if required
Use car and check level daily for first week until level stabilises

Many thanks Tony a quick question should the hoses still be fairly soft to squeeze when up to temp or hard?

You should be able to compress them fairly easily. They should not feel hard or like the rubber has 'gone off'

I'm sure Hedgehog is dead right, but I've found if you unscrew the expansion tank cap a bit it pressurises the system and water (and bubbles!) will flow from the bleed caps. When it's running clear tighten the expansion cap and then the bleed nuts. I do the thermostat / top one 1st then the one on the rad, 21mm socket required.
