since sorting the lump in my 300 tdi,it came with a different injection pump in better condition than mine, but tickover sounds higher,it chucks out black smoke when you put your foot down, does this sound like the pumps been tweaked?can i put it back as i dont think it will pass a mot

High tickover is a good sign, on a very worn pump the idle will generally drop.

Wouldn't worry about black smoke, pretty normal on older diesels under load. And more likely to be pump timing than fuel pump adjustment.

Look and see if the seals/paint on the pump screws have been broken. They will if it has been tampered with ;);)

I would only try and alter the screws if it actually fails the emissions test, leave well alone otherwise. :)

Easiest way to check if it turns out it has been tuned is to pull the diaphragm and check to see if you have two score marks on the slide.

If you search my threads I did one on de-tweaking a pump

pump does look like its been messed with centre cap looks twisted, quite a lot of black smoke on accelaration, old pump never did this, though lots more grunt, new belt fitted and timing good

If you wind the max fuel screw in to far not only does it cause black smoke it raises the idle.
Its the 6mm headed screw/bolt on the back of the pump.

yeah that's been modded. as above check for orig score marks and if the guy who did it wasn't a muppet, he will have marked the orig position on all the bits. either a mark or punch :)

just read beasty thread, his is a non turbo, mines a turbo, are talking the screw in the centre of the diaphragm needs backing off?

There's 3 common adjustments, the smoke screw under the cap, the star wheel under the slide and turning the diaphragm/slide.

Iirc the most common amount of adjustment is listed in my thread (I know it's non turbo but came from a 200tdi) but only the centre smoke screw will effect tick over.

Yep, this is the guide that most folk follow http://www.landroverweb.com/Pdf-files/Tuning_Land_Rover_Tdi_engines_Rev_2.pdf

Basically the fuelling is controlled by the smoke screw when there is no boost from the turbo then as the turbo spools up the diaphragm is pushed down to a maximum set by the star wheel. The cone under the diaphragm is offset so turning it up to a maximum of 180 degrees also increases fuelling under boost.

Heavy smoke with foot down hard could be a combination of all three.

Diaphragm can usually be returned to standard because the original score mark remains visible but for the star wheel and smoke screw it's guesswork.

The max fuel screw on the back raised my idle and smoke levels alot more compared to the other three adjustments, has a locking collar on normally if it hasnt been messed with.
Could always turn the turbo up more:D or get some "no smoke no poke" stickers
