Black smoke loss of power and engine light coming on and going off.

Oh eck!!! Been doing lots of things on my Freebie - have cleaned and refitted injectors. Have fitted engine breather BMW one. Fitted EGR bypass and after all thus had a slight miss. Replaced EGR with standard one and used injector cleaner. It seemed to be smoother but less powerful. Took it to work for a plug in diagnostic - no faults and all seemed ok.

Driving home - got to motorway and then there was a lot of black smoke drop in power then engine management light came on it cleared and off again for a couple of minutes then kept repeating the sequence. It's home mow and it starts and sounds ok revs freely but does give out of bit of black smoke - less than when under load.

Until this it has been powerful and running sweet except for a little miss at about 2500rpm that I thought was a injector.

I cannot obviously see any splits in the intercooler hoses but will check this.

I did get the MAF off and cleaned it but it ran for 100 miles ok apart from this very slight miss.

What do you reckon?

Easier said then done on an iPhone and the info you get may not be the most up to date. I have always that the forums are full of people who ate happy to give current info rather than it bring a repository where stuff is simply stored and doesn't change.

So yes I have searched and found similar but not exact matches to symptoms. It points to intercooler hoses and to be sure I have ordered 2 - I couldn't get down and dirty last night do it is off the road not until I can get to work on it. Hey ho

The little s**t - here is the problem!!!

I have ordered for quick delivery ordinary ones for now but yeh I will look to doing something else - I saw someone on here do a conversion with alloy or stainless pipe - looked awesome and would sort it long term. I cannot believe it was so dramatic - one minute all ok then drop in power and all hell breaks loose! Must have split in one go.

Why buy new? Why not just repair it? I repaired one on my Vectra, that was 18K miles ago, it's still going now!

Now you have announced it to the world watch it go! I hope not but I have to tell you this. I approached a roundabout and a guy driving a Japanese 4x4 came around bellowing black smoke - I thought get it sorted man! 200 yds later mine key go!!!! Ha ha that will teach me - it's karma!

I doubt it will go, the turbo boost pressure in the Vectra is around 22-25psi, it's held it fine so far, bring on the next 20K!

Update - new intercooler hoses fitted and a clips tightened up - now it's running sweet - bags of power and no black smoke.

I think there is still a slight flutter midrange but it's so small as to be nothing and may be the end of junk on an injector - I will drop one more bottle of cleaner in. Also I suspect the ECU now had to learn how to run the fueling system correctly without holes and a split on the hoses!!!

I am surprised how much of an effect it had though and tip from me is keep a roll of amalgam tape in the vehicle - might just get you home if it happens. Better advice though is junk the hoses when they get soft and limp!!!
