That poor engine, it will be dying a slow grinding death

When it starts breathing real bad and is using lots of oil pull it apart and post pictures of the damage. :D

:welcome2:

Ermmmm no not really... i cant see why it would die to be honest, its never let us down, i havve fitted twin lucas filters (bean can type) then it goes threw another water seperator filter but then its straight to the engine, it runs 12 hours a day unless i stop it for service etc but it just keeps running... it was never ment to last so long infact the engine was scrap to begin with but after a head gasket thrown on and i mean litraly thrown on and an over sized sump with cooling fins fitted sat in a 7inch "hole" fillled with water just to help cooling it just keeps going, i have had to put a differant turbo on as it spat the other straight down the exhaust (that was exciting) but any engine in any vehical with a turbo is prone to that, as for engine damage theres nothing to waer out as its fuel is going threw thee pump then injectors etc etc, as long as the engine oil is clean (in the sump not the fuel) then NO INTERNAL DAMAGE can occur... at worst i expect the injectors to clog or pump to fail but every 100 hrs i drop a bottle of fortron in the fuel just to help keep the pump and injectors flowing. :D

:)

Ask any one who's got a waste oil burner how much carbon and ash they have to clean out regularly
All that crap goes through the cylinders , slowly grinding the rings and bores away
But if it's a scrap engine any way then it does not matter :D

yes yes i agree about the oil burners but only coz thats a totaly differant kettle of fish, the engine ISNT running on total waste oil :der: its mixed with diesel and has the forces of compresion on its side to really kick the crap outa any deposits, now im not saying its ideal as its not but in answer to the original question the m51 wont run on it but the older less electrical engines will, yes in time it possibly could do damage but not if done correctly, after the first thousand hours of running we did remove injectors as 1 was "dribbling" and on inspection they were all ok (we have injector tester at yard) they did have slightly more carbon on the end but nothing to make any differancei just put it down to "old engine" thats allready been thrashed all its life. In my job as a marine diesel engineer i rebuild service etc etc egtc all sorts of engines from the old kelvin k1 (starts on petrol then flick over to diesel) and the stuart turners, bmc, lister, cats, deutz, mitsi, kubota and the list goes on and on, some people will run then on anythin they can get there hands on and they still go strong, the theory is there that its harmfull and i think that there will be some 1 out there that has blown an engine and blamed the black diesel but come on its just like out of every thousand tvs made some will die alot quicker than others.:D:mooning:

:kettlepot: i must say tho that this thread is interesting and im not setting out to upset any1, i can only comment on what ive seen and built, repaired and serviced with my own hands.:D:D:D

mike,
How much oil to diesel and how often do you just run it on diesel?
Have you got any of those old BMC 1500 diesels left.
As I fitted one of those in to a marina van once :D

I normally have a 50/50 mix of oil and diesel and its probrably run on diesel for 1 week out of the month (if its been a quiet week on the servicing side of the boatyard) and yes i have got a 1500 bmc, its not a full engine its in pieces as i build them up and bench test/run them so they are ready for "the phone call" when some 1 wants 1. ive got a good block with a crank ground to 30 thou with shells etc, ive got a head as well and its a good un, you have to be carefull tho as turkey has bought all our machines (from england when we used to produce them) and is still making them, well they have just stopped the 1.5 but are still doing the 1.8 BUT the cast quality isnt the same (****e metals) calcut marine are supplying them brand new but if you want an original that will last the test of time then i can help you, im just waiting for the injector pump and injectors to come back from P.F Jones in manchester, (they are bosh agents who re-con the units for me) so if you need any help then let me no my friend.:):)
