A bit of background. I've got a defender made up of all sorts of bits. registered 98 but with a disco 300TDi engine from about 96.
Anyway, i've had it about 5 years now, so last year, not really knowing the true age of the engine i got the timing belt changed just to be sure, by a garage (i would think so i hear you cry). when i collected it they told me the original timing belt was 'out by one tooth' so they had put the new one on correctly. But, it lost loads of power. So, i said, cos its a bitzer, put it back the way it was (what!?), which they did, and it ran OK again. But as a separate issue it had been smoking (i thought). Anyway a year down the line and much maintenance by me, i've put a new head on it and the smoking (steam) problem has gone away. But.....and here is the crux of the thread, when its cold its really lumpy (runs on 3 cylinders) Pot 1 (nearest the radiator) isn't firing (white smoke and black smoke under heavy throttle) , but once warm it runs ok. Except for occassional black smoke if you labour the engine. Is it possible the 'one tooth out' timing belt thing has come back to haunt me? Was going to check fuel pump timing tonight but need the tools. Couldn't improvise the flywheel locking tool cos plug not present. Anyway its a long thread but someone might be able to help. Thanks. Roy:doh:
