BioDiesel

This applies to many different landrovers, but mine is a Disco, so I'm asking here !


I have a Disco 300TDi Auto and I'm considering filling it up with biodiesel. the problem is I keep finding differing information.

Somewhere I've seen that all but the latest diesel landrovers can use it at 100% - some just need a new fuel pipe.
The biodiesel websites say 'most diesels' can run on biodiesel.
My IAM magazine says it's difficult to find cars that run on more than 30% mixture - I think they're talking about new cars.
Which is it ?


Can I use biodiesel?
Do I need to change anything?
(Should I do it to a borrowed vehicle )


If I can, there's a garage near my house selling biodiesel at 8p/ltr less than normal diesel !!!

been using my 300tdi on bio for over 12 months no problems at all, just make sure that you clean the sedimentor bowl out after a week of running it as it cleans out the tank of all the crap that is in there from diesel,. replace the fuel filter at the same time and enjoy more miles to the gallon and more power.

1 Yes but if you use vegetable oil (53p ltr) mixed with diesel (97p ltr) at a 50/50 mix it's only 75p per ltr.

2 No if you wanted to run 100% vegetable oil then some sort of preheaterwould be needed to thin the veg oil especially in the winter.

3 Yes it won't do any harm though it does smell a bit like a chippy

OK, so I've found a place locally that sells biodiesel from a pump.

What do I need to check / what questions do I need to ask ????

The garage in questions doesn't look too 'dodgy' but doesn't inspire confidence either - the 'no credit or debit cards' would normally make me turn away, but there isn't any other local source that I know of !!

I was just reading on another forum about someone being sold bio that was milky colour - even i know that's not right. i just want to be really careful at first.

DO NOT CONFUSE VEGETABLE OIL AND BIO-DIESEL.

They are NOT one and the same.

Use biodiesel without let or hindrance in any percentage up to 100%, but once in a while run it low and chuck in a quarter tank of DERV.

If it's a modern engine be cautious about using veg oil at all and best not more than 50-50 always diluted with DERV.

Veg Oil does not burn out fully and cleanly as does Biodiesel and DERV.
Veg oil can fill your lovely engine full of disgusting crap.
