ok so hours of net trawling tells me 265/85/16 on mk 1 disco steels is ok for series 3 but with turning loss , so spacers?? or should i stick to 235/85/16 when forkin out 500 sheets i want to get this right or the missus will be feeding the labrador my balls !! ..p.s its standard height freewheelin front salisbury rear heavy duty springs and extended shackles if that makes any difference excuse my ignorance but bought it like this :D:confused:

265's ok on my SWB with standard springs and shackles, ride is transformed, fook me nearly goes around corners without written notice now....

Are you sure that 265/85R16 will fit? 265/70R16 on Disco steels are no problem as that's the same as my set of Winter Tyres, but 85 profile is a lot taller.
The extented shackles help as they give about an extra 3/4" clearance.

I've got 265/75/16 on my 2a with no probs but it's got modular wheels that stick out further.235/85/16 are the equivilent of 750/16 that were fitted to lwb landys. If you've got swb rims the tyres will fit but when in full lock they'll rub on the chassis,so just fit lwb rims or a set of modular rims

thanks for mixed advice still bloody confused no one has mentioned mk 1 disco steels will the offset on these allow for 265 85 16 or alternatively 235 85 16 i have been told these are a 7j so assume that a 265 would just about be ok happy to cut into body as have a set of defender arches also would spacers help? spot the land rover newbie! embarassingly i am a mechanic so should probably be able to figure this out (hangs head in shame) but concrete confirmation would be good as really really dont want the labrador having deep fried gonads (mine) courtesy of the Wife (head office) when i get it wrong to the tune of £500 fat ones cheers people save me!!!

thinkin about it if you have 265 on disco steels and can turn ok the only issue with fitting an 85 profile will be hitting the arches which i can cut as have defender arches to go on waddya think ??

The disco rims do fit on but if you're fitting tall tyres they will catch the springs on full lock because the disco steelys don't have much offset(on a series they sit closer to the inner wings/chassis). Plus the rims are thicker steel than series ones so the wheelnuts don't go on as far:scratching_chin:You could fit spacers but for £180 or whatever they are you could buy some new modular rims cheaper and solve the problem of rubbing. This is what I have on mine

another thing what tyres you getting for £500?
I've just bought these from paddock4x4 265/75/16 only £320 delivered!

the child was extra!!!

235/85's went on my series no problem
I know that they'll fit fine, but 265/85 is 25mm taller in profile.

I went straight for 9.00's on mine or metric equivalent 255/100R16, that needed a lot of work. I fitted Michelin XL which are big even for 900 size, they measure 36 1/2" tall at 20 psi.

The tyres hit the back of the front wing light panel, the back of the front bumper also. I cut the front wing and bumper.
Fitted One Ton Shackles.
Adjusted steering stops.
Tyres hit underside of rear tub, so cross-bracing has to go, but it still slightly rub the underside on full articulation.
The outside bracing to the skin of the rear arches needs slight grinding, but that really is minor and doesn't show.

I used to tun 235 85 r16 on 7j modulars on my series 3, no problems with rubbing/rubbing. They were the same tread as those new ones v8jon has just got...very good tread pattern too :D

They are a copy of what used to be the bfg trac edge,if they're as good as what the Bfg's used to be I'll be well happy:)

The rims on mine are 7j with 265/75/16 and they're fine.

excellent thanks for all your advice everyone, will be going for the 265/75/16 soon as my audi is sold on wednesday ,hopefully.(allowing for the fact that e bay harbors a lot of d*ckheads) cant wait new wheels new paint job tinted windows and some chequer plate bits ( yes i know at 35 i should be more grown up) bring on the summer so i can take the roof off again!!!
ONE WIFE ... LIVID!!
