Big tire problem

Hi,

I have just lifted my Disco and put 235 85/16 muds on (very happy) but I now have the problem of having my spare wheel attached to my roof rack because it's too big for the wheel carrier!!!!!!

Does anyone know where i can purchase a new one with a different angle to it.

You shouldn't have a problem with the spare wheel. I've got 265/75r16's on modulars on mine and it goes on fine. Or is it the height of the wheel catching on the bumper?

I have 235/85/16 muds fitted and the only mod thats been done to the spare carrier is to space it out from the door using same steel bar which has the holes for the bolts drilled in it

The series 1 200 had spare wheel carrier nuts that go on the inside (not the flat ones that go on the outside but the domed ones - different from steel wheel nuts as they are flatter and larger diameter). Defenders had the same things (or something very similar!). If you have these or can get these then all you need to do is wind them out on the threads until the wheel fits using the alloy wheel nuts. May take a couple of trial fittings until you get it right.

However all this said you need to weight the pros and cons... firstly thats a heavy old tire to have on the door. A door that has hinges that are prone to failure. however having a heavy old spare wheel up on the roof rack makes things a bit top heavy and this is something to avoid as much as possible...

Personally I am about put my spare on the roof to see how I get on with it as my rear door pillar is suffering a bit from the old tin worm in a place I can't easily get at...

The wheel only just catches the back bumper just stopping it from shutting.

Wheel is currently on the roof rack and not been to bad as far as roll goes, but would feel a bit better knowing its secured on the back with locking nuts.

Will have a look at maybe getting one made by a fabricator to make one on a slight angle upwards.

thats what the D44 ones are, basically offset upwards, not sure what size they take though
