Hi i've got a 96 p38 with big problems, cant get into it because the door lock has gone and the battery is flat. anyone have any advice on how to get in to it?

Theres a guy called Rick-the-Pick over on rangerovers.net, he's a locksmith in Sussex who is a P38 guru. If anyone can get you in he can.
If you are in a real hurry break the window, pop the bonnet and hook up a set of jump leads then unlock it with the remote, hopefully the alarm wont have superlocked.
Do a search on the rr.net forum as this has happened a few guys over there before.

Don't brake the window !! pop the 1/4 panel window out, then reach in and undo the lock ^^^ Spud says, then fit the window back in.......carefully now!!

If the battery is flat can't you the key as a key instead of the remote ?
I used the key on a several RR I went to look at as the batteries were always flat if they had been on the forcourt for some time.

I did this on my Classic while I was working on my ignition problems.

Or is your lock completely faulty?

Hope you have luck
Fred

I would have thought too, that you can still open the door mechanically? that's kida strange if you cant

It seems to happens regular enough, If anything goes wrong with the driver side lock the only way to unlock is via the remote central locking so if your battery then dies you've no key lock and no central locking so you're well and truly locked out!!
Its one of the reasons its so important to make sure your vehicle is not affected by the 'dreaed battery drain' original rf receiver.

You could try back feeding the battery by jump leading the live side of the starter motor, it would work in an classic, I'm not sure about the P38 though, someone might check out the ETM and see if that is a direct connection to the positive of the battery. If it is get yourself underneath with a battery and jump leads and use the remote to open he up.

cant open the door mechanically, the door lock has failed, it was replaced previously by a "land rover specialist" but has failed again! we are totaly locked out.

Like spud says, you can earth ir almost any place, and then find where the live feed is under the Landy, there must be some place you can hock the live up to, get under and have a look,
live side of the starter motor
like spud says, you have to give it a bash

surely with the live side of the starter it'll be switched off, unless you've locked a key in the car in the start position?
Maybe, see if you can get under it and can release the bonnet from below. Or try another lock. If not, phone the aa, i've done it a couple of times after my ex locked the keys in my old golf!

To break into a P38, using a suitable instrument pry the top of the door so the rubber seal is jst opened. Insert inflatable device (a bit like blood pressure armband), inflate, pop in small wooden wedge, move inflatable bottle, pump up again and you now have a gap big enough to insert metal rod to lift door lock. That's how Toffee broke into me mates P38 when he got locked out on Friday...

The bonnet lock is pretty tough to get at, there are two of them and the nearside one is buried behind the radiator and battery box. Not easy.

The wire bolted to the back of the solenoid on top of the starter on the right side of the engine as you look at it form the front is hard wired to the positive of the battery. If you can get a jump lead on to this and earth it off an earth strap or engine mount you should be able to get the central locking to open the doors and jump start the car normally. Its your best shot without breaking a window or getting professional help.

thank you everyone for your suggestions you've all been so helpful. me and the other half are going to have a bash at getting into it at the weekend. thanks x

There used to be an old trick in some cars if you remove the mirror glass and connect a 9v battery to the mirror wires this would put sufficient power in the system to operate the locks by the remote. A smoke alarm battery is enough. Pop the glass out by gently tugging it from its outer edge and it should come free. Try the two wires attached to the back of the glass first before you go twiddling with the motor ones. Worth a try if it works.

i dont know if it will work on the RR. happened to me on a 205 and on a golf,

if its not superlocked, that is you can operate the door lock pins. get a welding rod (electrode welder) and then bend it into a sort of square "U" with one side longer than the other, put it flat next to the window, and slip it in between the window and the rubber seal. when its in, turn it 90 degrees and look for a position where you can push the pin up.

hope you can get it open.

P.S. Dont try this anywhere but at home.:)

in this case call them and tell them there faulty workmanship/parts is giving you reason to sue them! see if they wana help you get in for free!
