For the second time, what sounds like the prop coming loose and crashing about underneath has happened again.both times, I came to a stop and both times it drove again. I thought it was the rear diff but all seemed OK. I drove with just the front prop on to prove it when it happened again for the second time. Box boxes seem OK but I'm not sure. What could cause such a loud and vibrating noise but not affect the drive??? I've been told it might be a half shaft or CV joint. I've kinda ruled out the half shaft as it drove with the rear prop off, unless it can still drive with one half shaft while in diff lock??

I wonder if it might be worth draining the oil from both gearboxes and both diffs.

I know from experience that a synchro spring going through meshed gears is not a nice noise, or a collapsed bearing allowing rollers to do the same in a transfer box. So I imagine bits of diff or fragments of half shaft going through a diff would be much the same.

Draining the oil should let you see at least some of the bits if anything has collapsed.

Other thoughts were (as mentioned) internals of handbrake, and if you have drum brakes at the back, a loose shoe or lining.
