Afternoon guys,
I'm in the process of basically neatening up my stuff in the back of the 90, but this is a general car electrics question really. So in the back I have amp for music, computer, invertor, aux lights, charger for radios...etc. What is the best way of getting power to all this? I was thinking of running a thick pos and neg power direct from battery to a pos distribution block and a negative distribution block, and then each thing can take its power from these. Is this the right way or should each item run back to the battery to avoid interference?

god damn electrickery

Can you not just run the poss to a fusebox? Thats what I have done. Run one big cable to the box and everything leaves from that. I believe only high ampage drawing equipment needs to earthed back to battery. Ie. Winch, fridge etc.

I may be wrong.

they do a better one than that which only takes 1 power in cable. Thats what i have. Got a 25mm square cable from my 2nd battery to a 6 way fusebox. All my accessories come out of that. easy it is.

I've gone with a similar method granted pretty much everything has its own built in fuse. Got 2 4 way distributer blocks designed for amp installations. Same as the fusebox method really, and means I can have a pos distributer and neg distributer so I know the earth is always going to be a good one. Was getting some strange interference at times when I had the computer sharing an earth with an amp, so I assume the safest bet is to run the earth straight from the battery. I'll let you all know how I get on tomorrow!

Now I just gotta work out a really swish method for plylining the sides!! lol.

I've wired a couple of these up on friends cars:

Very neat, one big +ve and -ve in, and you get two banks of fuses to power stuff.
Ok, it might be pricey, but it's neat and stops your vehicle from going up in flames.

available from VWP or Devon4x4

ok so the two blocks that I ordered were not in stock so I need a change of plan. The fusebox options that have been posted, would these be suitable for running amps through? I can't remember off the top of my head what the fuse sizes are for them but I know they are pretty hefty. Obviously it would be great to run everything through one of these as they look so god damn neat!!

Not sure about suppliers, but they (the fuse box) will be fine to handle an amp or two. Most amps have a 30 or 40 amp fuse, no worse than some decent spotlights.

the last one i did in a landcruiser, has just come back from an Africa trip. fusebox was running the fridge, 500w amp, spots and carPC and spare DIN sockets,no meltdown at all.

you could look out for a chandlers, as they normally stock stuff like this, but expect to come out arm and leg-less.
I'd go for one of the mail order places. much better VFM

Heres what i did:

Ran a single thick cable from the battery +ve. Put a large 80 amp fuse in the line of that right next to the battery,so if that cuts through itll blow and befine.

Made meself a distro block - piece of steel (didn' have any copper) all cleaned up shiny, mounted on a piece of wood, mounted on some plastic. Then screwed ring terminals with wires in them (duh) onto this, with wee short wires going to a fuse box, bought very cheap off ebay (2 8 fuse holder, like £3 or summat)

Then wire each acc off this. Fitted the whole lot into a platic project box, which is mounted behind the drivers seat.

Vehicles are negative earth for a reason, you don't need to run -ve cables to each item and the battery, simply bolt the -ve lead for the acc to a good clean point on the body or chassis, sorted.

I ended up biting the bullet and getting the one from Devon 4x4, if it can take an amp as well as all my gear then it is definetely worth its price!!

Boydy, your setup sounds very good! Sadly I don't have the time at the moment to make my own gear otherwise I'd be copying your setup right now!!! lol. Have got a paintball weekend this weekend, incorporating a 7 hour game and lots and lots of drinking and camping, so ideally I want to get up early tomorrow and get it done before we leave at 1pm so its all neat in the back and I don't have to tell people to "mind the wire" lol

Not D4Xfookoff. dun't ya know we is boycotting em?? partly cos they is ripping off, overpriced ****ers what don't give a **** about their customers, and partly because they charge twice as much as every fooker else. But mainly cos I hate the fookers and "my enemy is your enemy :D"
