Best tyres for an old Ninety??

Yes, and for their very directional nature, wider tyres will slip sideways when the narrower ones cut in and go across the slope.
Doubt if you will go far wrong with BFG, had a good rep for a long time!

235x85x16 At's work quiet well in the snow. Some treads are better than others. I originally had Trac Edge which weren't so good. Coopers worked better and General Grabber AT2's were even better. Come Jan/Feb the snow will be almost to the top of the wheels. Makes interesting driving ' especially off road through the forest. Driving on snow isn't so bad, the problems start when you have ice underneath. I slid of the road one year into a ditch, some old woman in a Citroen 2CV stopped and asked if I wanted a lift.

I like AT in the snow too, not that we ever get as much as that!

As you say, powder snow is no problem, couple of days of thaw and refreeze turns it into a sheet of ice. Then life gets really interesting!

2cv are an awesome off roader as well!

I will never forget a story the previous owner of my Defender told me. He was in Morocco going up a dried river bed in the Atlas mountains in the Defender, he was thinking to himself how great Defenders are at tackling difficult terrain which other vehicles would shudder to even look at. When he got to the top of the mountain there were two french girls having a picnic. They got up there in a Citréon 2CV Van

Twenty years ago the Lands End trial had a section up through one of the lanes here. No 4wd in Lands End. Only two vehicles made the section. Both 2cv!
