Hi,

I'm new to the world of Landy and I'm looking to make my first buy.

All I'm after is a 3 door 90 (the small one which I believe is the station wagon?) but as I'm only going to use it as a second motor and the budget is up to £3k, I'm not which is the best to buy and what to look for?

Can anybody offer brief buying guidance & recommendations please.

Thanks.

Buy what ever model takes your fancy, they all give you trouble and cost loads to keep running sweet, but thats what makes it worth it...

You're in roughly the same spot I was about a year ago. Same budget, but had to go with a 110 station wagon to get the idea past The Accountant.

Here are a few links with lots of tips:
Land Rover FAQ - Repair & Maintenance - Series - What to look for
DEFENDER BUYERS GUIDE
The Land Rover Buyer's Guide - by Glencoyne 4x4 (Thetford)

They're not all Defender-specific, but they're still quite relevant.

Lots of folks here recommend stalking prospects on Ebay, but I found AutoTrader more useful. I had something very specific in mind and ended up driving ~200 miles each way to get it.

Otherwise, have a read around here for at least a month to see what people complain about - add those gripes to your pre-buy check list. At that price range I reckon you're looking for an older model with a few dings. It will inevitably need fixing, so be prepared to do some work yourself.
This is a *great* resource for technical questions with lots of really knowledgable folks willing to go out of their way to help you, so you've already got a leg up.

Good luck and welcome!:welcome2:

Not sure if you are aware of this already, but the 90 comes in a hard top version as well as the station wagon version, which has rear windows and seats

I looked at OVER 25 Landys before I bought mine. I would NOT rush into it. Prices will have risen at this time of year as people look to get one for the winter snow. If you're not in a rush i'd look at loads and maybe wait till spring!

He's right. If you don't want one urgently then wait for the sun but if you want one now you'll have to do more searching to find one at a fair price. For £3000 you can get a good 200 or 300 if you look hard enough. I'd say go for at least a 200 because that's when they actually started moving.

Why do you want a station wagon? Generally, Ninetys only have side-facing seats in the back with lap-belts. These are okay for adults / short trips, but if you're thinking of putting kids in the back, forget it. You can shell out for forward-facing seats, but that's going to eat into your budget. A One-Ten would be a better bet if you really need back seats.
