im almost frightened to ask this question but here goes....
i have this 2.5 turbo 1990 station wagon, and have been told that the land rover people just stuck a turbo on it but its not really made for it .
im not gonna pretend i know what the guy meant but..now heres the question what would be the best thing to put in there but not a v8.
ive been told a tdi 5 i think

The 2.5 TD (the one you have at the moment) is a little lower on power than the later 2.5 Tdi engines, it's also a little weaker (allegedly)

Either a 200 or 300 Tdi would be a great replacement, 200 might be easier to do as it has a similar gearbox as standard to the 2.5 TD engine you already have.

TD5 is the most recent engine you're likely to find recon or 2nd hand - but they're far more 'electric and plastic' than the Tdi's for only a relatively small power increase - would most likely be more expensive than a Tdi replacement.

However, if it ain't broke, why fix it? Why not see how the 2.5 TD you've got lasts and performs before you replace it out of hand?

Cheers,

good info and i think ill get this engines stripped and cleaned then run it til it dies a death!!
as for my manners ive read many posts from this forum and err....bollox

Whats up with the engine to warrant having it stripped and cleaned (don't really know what you mean by stripping and cleaning). I'm with Adz if it int bust dont mend it. Just change the oil and cambelt and set the tappets. Why make work for yourself, unless of course you've got loadsamoney.

thats great news grunt thanx. im not sure what i mean by stripped down a cleaned either..i suppose im just saying general engine overhaul but what youve suggested sounds great.
at the moment ive gotta trust in the mechanic my brother found, cos im out of england. you cranky lot are my source of knowhow at moment.
so thanx

no i never did find out, i was in england when i was told that so havent seen the bloke since.
im now living in europe and thats why i cant ask mechanics the questions i have with regards to my land rover, i know how i want it to look and what i want it to be able to do, but cant easily explain it to folk.
for now ive had done what grunt suggested and hope itll be ok. i have big dreams for this vehicle "and i will realise them"..

you engine wasnt meant for a turbo because it is basically a 2.5 n/a with turbo attached. it wasnt designed with turbo in mind and therefore cannot take the extra strain a turbo puts on the parts. if you dont look after it and give it the beans everywhere it will blow up sooner rather than later.

i think thats right?

WELL SOMEONE HAD TO SAY IT V8 IT WAS MADE FOR LAND ROVERS

THE QUESTION WAS WHICH IS THE BEST ENGINE I HAVE DRIVEN THEM ALL AND THE V8 IS THE ONLY ONE THAT TICKS ALL THE BOXES WHEN IT COMES TO PUTTING A SMILE ON YOUR FACE YOU CAN RUN A V8 ON L.P.G JUST AS CHEAP AS AN OIL BURNER :) :) :)
