I recently made the silly mistake of knocking a switch to a 12v socket in the boot as I got out of my Disco. I then discovered this some 18hrs later after a 55w flood had been on under my coat. By some miricle I didn't burn the car to pieces (or even the coat) however I did bring the battery down to 4V!

Fortunately I have an Optima Yellow top battery (still quite new) which seams to have survived the experiance better than average. :D

Anyway, once I got going with a jump start I thought i ought to look at the Jump Starter packs you can get but when I looked on this forum most of the comments are less than nice about them as they aparently only just about have enough umpf to start a landy and my disco isn't young and often takes more than one round of starting when it gets cold.

So - what about battery chargers, I'm looking for something that will keep an old battery toped up in the garage for jump starts and running 12V gear when camping but that will give a fast high current charge to the Disco (or Mondeo) when something goes wrong (as above)?

I know there are a few threads on here related but thought I'd try and group some current opinion as half the threads are 5+ years old and many of the chargers mentioned arn't around any more.

Read good reports of the ones that Lidl have in occassionally. It's a smart charger that can stay hooked up to keep things topped up. When they have them they're about £15 which is a bargain compared to CTek ones... Worth a look if you have a Lidl nearby. Lots of info on them on the Syncro forums
