just replaced my water pump and belt on my 300 tdi thinking that was where the squeaking noise was coming from, to find out its the belt tensioner next to it. looking on ebay new tensioners are about £40 and a straight swap but there are also people selling bearings at just a fiver which is a good saving but is it an easy repair or im i better just getting the full tensioner

depends how good you are with the spanners... and the state of your current tensioner i would say!

One nut to swap the entire thing, or remove the tensioner then dismantle and replace the bearings.. your choice really

It comes off easy, and at a fiver worth a go. A half decent vice and a socket the right size. Remember to wear goggles tho cos the bearings are had as **** and bits come off them like shrapnel.

If you can get the bearing out, even in bits and you look up somebody like bearing services chances they can match it for even less than a fiver.
