1989 90 with 200tdi. Sat for about 18 months.

Engine ran with a little tinkering - Electric shock off ignition key - any ideas?? (good anti-theft!)

Starter sounded terrible and was a little slow to turn (had to turn the engine by hand to loosen the starter) but I'm guessing just some surface rust on the bushes - Nothing that constant use wont solve??

Clutch pedal completely solid - is this just the master seal kit or is the slave renowned as well?? (possible that the clutch plate is stuck?)

the transfer and gearbox are being dropped out anyway cos i knackered them the last time i was out. (poor assembly of differential linkage = knackered central diff!)

also, i'm being lazy here but is a transfer box off a disco the same ratio as a 90? As far as i can remember its just the gearbox that differs??

also wondering if anyone has an opinion on fluids/oils?
new engine/brake/diff/steering etc... or not??

any advice appreciated - thanks.

As you are stripping the boxes off try opening the bleed nipple on the clutch slave, if the pedal now moves and it pumps fluid out then it may be a seized slave, if it doesn't move look towards the master and linkages.

Get the serial numbers of both transfer boxes and look at ashcrofts website and I believe that will tell you what ratios you have (think their website is down at present).

Change all fluids (including coolant) and possibly cambelt & rollers if you don't know the history

ok thanks. yeah cambelt and rollers and head gasket have all been done about 500 miles (2 years) ago. i only had the engine in about 2 months before stacking the transfer box.

will check ashcrofts when they are up and running again. think the defenders are 10.14 or similar. my current box identification is no good as i used parts from various to put it together. the casing is different to the gears on that one.

cheers
