bearing whine up front

My 96 300 tdi has developed a loud bearing whine/rumble at the front of the engine-seems to be the A/C compressor.the belt driving this does not seem to drive anything else-is it ok to just remove the belt,and deal with the problem later?Anyone changed a bearing in A/C compressor?Is it D.I.Y.able?
