Bearing...Diff.... Other wheel related noise?

Hey,

I have a humming noise that kicks in around 30mph. To me it sounds like it's coming from the front driver's side, sounds like the hum rotates with the wheel.

I took a mechanic in it, he couldn't decipher between a bearing or diff. He thought sometimes it sounded more central, like the diff, but then also sounded like a bearing on the driver's side front wheel at times.

Is there any indication from the sound that I can go by? It's booked in on Wednesday with someone who's more familiar with Landy's. ... I just like to get a head start and know what I'm in for.

If nobody is absolutely sure - then the diff (IRD) will be the last to change as its $$$. The brakes can sometimes not release properly and can create noises that sound like bearings etc.

Try changing the oil in the IRD - if its greyish then the bearings are shot and should be reconditioned (usually by buying a recon unit in exchange for yours)

Thanks GrumpyGel. Yep, he told me the diff is the most expensive so I'm hoping it's just a bearing or something. Anything that doesn't cost hundreds!!

Vcu bearings are hard to trace?!

Well bearing sounded like the lesser of the two jobs. Is there a way to tell, by sound ?

Vcu bearings are hard to track down cos you sit right on top of them so the sound seems all around you. You really need to drop it down and spin the bearings to test em properly

To me, it really sounds like front drivers side, not all around. Ah well, it's booked in on Wednesday

try changing the tyres round on the wheel of course see if it changes hope this helps

Like teddy says tyres can make bearing type noises when they start going out of shape. Freelanders are known to have the problem Goodyear wranglers seem particularly prone to it

You know, funny you should say that. The drivers side front tyre DOES look a funny shape, when I look at it head on. Like a bulge at the bottom, as if it's going flat. But then I check it's inflated at the garage, and it is. No matter how much I inflate it, the bulge is there. Hope it's that! Thank you

Before taking it into a garage, Check all 4 tyres are of the same make/model

And if you do replace tyres. do it in pairs at least with the new ones on the back!
recommend replacing 4 at a time so not to damage the 4wd system


Also have you driven around in circles left and right, If so any sound difference?

Does the noise disappear around 65/70 mph?

All tyres are circles make/model.

Will test the circles tomorrow on a car park.

If the noise did disappear at 70mph (ish) what would that indicate?

Possibly.

Vcu centre bearings. Past set I had the noise disappeared at 70

Saying that so did the drive shaft fault

Soooo, bearings/diff all look ok says Mr Mechanic. May be the tyre thing after all..
