This is more of an FYI really.
A faulty (old) battery can cause the charging warning light to stay on, even if it is then re-charged enough (off the vehicle) to start the engine multiple times.
Presumably there was something inside the battery that stopped it receiving charge from the alternator -- the car had been sitting around, virtually unused, for about a year, and the battery was suspect before that. Apparently they don't like being idle.
Chap at Camberley Auto Factors tested battery, and it passed, but was showing over-voltage. On fitting new battery, problem went away.
(Have now tested voltage at battery when running, and seeing a nice 14V from the alternator, and the voltmeter is looking healthy too!)
