Battery Size

After many years faithful service my battery has finally died. It is a 110ah 800cca and always started first kick. Was going to stick a spare tractor one in it but just checking if there could be any problems. The ones I have are both 130ah one with 1000cca and the other 950cca.
Used tractor batteries in a series 3 and 300tdi in the past but they didn't have fancy leccy box thingies so just checking.

Just as long as it is 12v. [which I guess they are] and physically fit it will be fine. The electrics of whatever truck you have will only take what they need. The fact there is more power available means things would just run for longer if batt was not being charged.

What battery do you have that puts out 1000cca and stil fits in a land rover battery box?
I am running a YUASA YBX3642 (link) as it was the highest rated I could find that would physically fit under the seat.

a 642/644 I would think

The 1000cca is a 642 and the 950cca ones are 019. (Thought they were 020’s)
Just been out checking them and think the 642 going to be a bit tight for height. Others are only about 190mm so better than one that came out. Sure I tried an 020 before too but iirc it was a good bit longer and a pita to handle.

Love to know why the battery is in such a difficult location

There are limited advantages to fitting huge batteries.
As you point out, they are awkward to handle and fit in the vehicle.
If your alternator is working, it will quickly fully charge the battery while the vehicle is running.
And batteries warm up while cranking, giving increased performance.
So a big battery warms up less than a smaller one, resulting in less performance.

Big battery will crank for longer though, but if that much cranking is needed you will have an old worn 10j or other problems.
644 Fits my 1990 Ninety's battery box just fine.

If you have to wind it over that long, there are other problems.
And cranking for too long can overheat the starter, even resulting in a segment coming out if you go on long enough.
Standard size battery works OK for me.

Having the same size battery in my Landy's and Tractors is handy at times, Peter can be robbed to get Paul going.

Thanks all. Would be happier with 100ah 800cca but with having the others handy that will fit it just seems a no brainier. The 1000’s in an old tractor on its last legs that needs a good old caw to get it going the other two were bought in spring, one to use in an old combine and one as a spare. Got the 2 on a deal for £140.

That is true. Probably going to have to put the bow thruster battery on the generator starter on the boat anytime now.

cranking aside, a bigger capacity means you have more wiggle room. if you go minimum spec then when a few cca drop off, you run into problems. if you go over spec, you can drop quite a few cca as the battery naturally ages and you'll still be ok
