I have a 96 300 tdi, having trouble with battery after driving at high speeds, seems to lose its power after a run on the motorway, have now been stuck twice at services, only jump starting will fire the engine, the strange thing is if I dont stop untill i reach my destination the car starts no problem after a few hours or the following morning, have replaced the battery with a new one and now this one is starting to lose its power too!

can anyone shed any light on this???

could it be the alternator overcharging the battery????

Get a multimeter set on DC volts and stick it across the battery. Should be no higher than about 14.5V when revving. Any more will cook it. Does the charging light go out and stay out on start up?

Sounds like bad earth/s,knackered alternator, wire dropped odd somewhere.Does this happen more with the lights on?

I always used to check alternator by taking the battery + lead off, if engine stops you know you have a charging problem.

hi guys, the charging light goes out on start up and all electrics are fine, battery always seemed a little weak on start up in the mornings, but after driving at 70-80mph for 1/2 hour the car would not start until it had cooled down, now my new battery is starting to sound a little weak, i have put a meter to test the voltage and it read 13-14v and no change whilst reving the engine, maybe I should check all the wiring!

thats not a good idea as your battery then has no reference point. and thinks your battery is reet flat so it then goes into mega charge mode. which can result in a kanckerd alternator

OK - you say its 13-14V but no difference when revving. A fully charged battery with the engine off should be about 13.6 - 13.8 especially if its new. Start with that and see if its higher with the engine running. It is beginning to sound like an alternator but who knows with these complex beasties?

A few suggestions
1/ check the voltage with the live of the battery and a point on the engine as the earth, as this will give you the true voltage that the car is recieving and will show whether there is a bad earth.
2/ as the engine is hot when it is causing you to jump start it, it could be overfuelling and unable to compress the amount of fuel in the combustion chamber (piston rings etc expand and create a better seal when hot)

thanks for all the replys, have tested voltage with another meter, battery is reading 12 volts, checked bat using engine earth no change in voltage, once started alternator is also givind 12v, so now assuming alternator is the problem, can the bushes be changed or do i have to replace entire unit??

new battery, new alternator 3 months ago, battery too flat to start engine, back to square 1 again....anyone got any ideas........or is it time to get rid of it....

try taking earth lead battery to chassis off at chassis end and bolt it to the engine .this fixed my 96 disco charging problems .

Had something similar with my old 200tdi. Turned out to be corrosion in the terminal of the power cable at the starter motor end. Battery was fine but too much resistance in the system!
A cheap fix for once.

Jon
