battery or alternator?

hey
installed a cd player into my 89 defender and having a bit of trouble on the power issue, it starts up ok and goes load but when i either brake or turn the lights on it will turn off and then come back on. is it a battery or alternator fault??
 
so acts the same as when the ignition is switched on, cuts out then starts again? as all power is used to start, so is it wired to the live only or has it a switched live off the ignition?
 
i wired it to power to purple and orange/white and then black one for earth.
it also cuts out if i have been coasting for too long. As far i as i can see its wired up ok but i may b wrong :/
 
I had a similar problem when i got a new stereo. I havent had time to look at earths properly yet so for the time being have just run a seperate feed to it and it works fine. :)

Just need time to sort out the dodgey earth/s :mad:
