Battery insurlation cold weather

In the cold weather my new and more power battery still struggles to start the diesel engine in my landrover . But when ithe weather gets a bit warmer it turns the engine over without a problem with energy to spare.

I have heard that cold weather can reduce power in your batterv by 20 persent bearing this in mind has anyone come up with cold wearther mods. I have just put cardboard around the battery to try and insulate it from the cold. I alway put a radiater muff on each winter fully closed.

it would be interesting to hear from you guys up north as things are a little warmer in the south west

I've had many cars with insulation jackets fitted to the battery.

have you checked the glow plugs are working and wired correctly

If your starting and charging systems are in good condition and everything's as it should be you won't need such a thing. Tucking your battery up warm is just treating the symptoms, not the underlying disease.

Batteries that suffer in the cold are normally under rated for their intended application, or badly maintained. What spec is your new one fella? And where are ya ? Put yer location in your profile

Like everyone else says - you need to make sure that the charging system is performing it's intended task efficiently, and that your Heater plugs are working correctly.

I've had no problems in the cold on my projects in the past, and that's with no insulation or trickery under the hood.

carpet underlay really helps insulate batterys and its free if youve gorra few bits laying around

I have just used a aluminium and foam insulation around the battery box which is under the seat. Yes, cold does affect the battery output and also increases the oil viscosity so eventually as things cool down you reach a point where nothing works.

Pop down the local scrap yard - many cars had them fitted. If you have a word, they may keep one when they remove the battery for you - or some yards may have vehicles waiting that could donate a battery jacket.

Hi guys thanks for your thoughts and ideas, my landrover is always having maintainace things done to it just to keep it in a roadworthy and dependable condition and as we all know that is hard work. I have never had starting problems of this kind other than the glow plugs that were replaced and are still relitivly new. Today when its warmer it turns the engine over and starts very efficiently the only change came when the weather became very very cold. so charging system is ok, battery is 590 amps 70 amps 20ah. so my idea is to protect the battery.

Your wasting your time putting insulation around the battery, unless you are going to fit a heater inthere as well. All you will do is slow the cooling down , so unless you are going to go out and start it every so often you are not going to achieve much .
As previously posted your prob should not be battery temp. Look at charging system for voltage, and what amps you are putting out . Starter motor torque, and connections . Is the battery getting fully charged ?

I was under the impression a battery jacket was for a car that had a tight engine bay. Meaning the battery was close to the engine and likely to got warm. More than the effects of the cold.

nothing beats a nice little blankie and tucking your landy in at night though
