Hi all I have a tdi300 with new battery which seems to keep discharging, when testing the Alternator am getting 13.9 ish fast 3000 rpms, question, when I reconnect the battery after charging and before I turn on ignition the fuel pump start's, is this how it should be, or should it only start after turning on ignition, it would seem it's live all the time so could be the reason for battery discharge?

No I have a number of Good battery’s, I disconnect all leads from the battery, when re connecting a motor starts for a second or two then stops. At this stage I have not turn on any ignition in fact the keys are in my hand. I’ve had the vehicle of 18 months or so and its always been like this. I’m wondering if the vehicle is wire up wrong and connected to a terminal on the ignition key that is always live, I think the pump, if that’s what it is, should only start with ignition ON?

Should not be anything on other than alarm if fitted unless ignition is on. 1993 will not have a electric lift pump.

Would a sticking relay keep the pump live? I thought the make and brake would be via the key. Please bear with me I'm into vintage vehicles no relays on these.

Question on the 300tdi is the lift pump electrical or machanical? If is the latter then I'm barking up the wrong tree and must be something else that's starting but what?

Ok. It does sound like an electric motor runs for about 2 to 3 secs then stops this happens as soon as I reconnect the battery and sound like its pumping something up to a pressure then switches off. Could there be an air con unit compressor and if so where is it? Nothing in the cab for air on thought.

OK an Up date: had the alternator checked out, it's OK, the thing I could hear when reconnect the battery is the radio cd drive, Electrician confirmed the discharge was well within limits only the radio. So the assumption is I'm not using it enough! I must admit it's less than a few miles a day so intend to put a battery conditioner in.
