Hi . I read about different charge rates for batteries so I will ask about my situation .
When I put the multimeter on my battery when the car is just sat doing nothing the average reading is about 12.5v so then I put the probes to the battery terminals and the meter where I can see it from the drivers seat and get in the car to rev the engine the meter shows 13.3v at 2000 rpm . Is this about right or should it be more . We live in a relatively small village and the car doesn't do many long drives so do you think the Alternator is not charging enough or is it just the fact it doesn't get charged much when we're out .
My problem with sporadic starting is going ok because for the last week the car has started ok . So finally it was maybe replacing the Camshaft position sensor that sorted it . Still keeping fingers crossed , I will give it a couple of weeks more before I can say sorted .
Thanks everyone for the support

Your battery 'at rest' should be close to 12.4/12.6 Volts.
When the alternator is running the voltage should be higher typically this would be around 14 to 14.5V if the battery needs to be charged and can be less (13.3V) if the battery is charged and the revs are lower.
A voltage regulator in the alternator will automatically stop the battery from being overcharged.

If you turn your lights on and the heater fan etc and rev the engine to around 3000 rpm you should see over 14V if the charging system is working correctly.
As you have said your battery has 12.5V when resting, this indicates that the battery is healthy and charged.

Thank you very much for that useful information .
