Hi all,

I've searched the forum, and to my surprise I haven't come across a thread that's particularly helpful at pointing a finger at a battery to buy for a Discovery 1. I've got an N Reg 2.5 diesel, and the battery I currently have is very small and seems to be nearing the end of it's life.

My question is: can anyone recommend a specific battery I can buy? My Dad gets very good discount at Halfords, but I'm not really too sure what I'm looking at. I've not bought a battery before, but have read a bit online saying you want high cold cranking amps.

Any recommendations please?

Muchos gracias!

If you go to the Halfords site and put in the Reg No of the vehicle, it will give you the options for your vehicle

Yes, the recommendations on those sites that match the battery to the registration number are usually the minimum you can get away with. Usually I like to give myself a bit of a margin on top of that. Fortunately when you're buying online the vendors usually give the dimensions as well as the amp hours and CCA figures. You can never have too much battery capacity!

My experience over many years of motoring is that the vehicle manuf. specifications for a battery are adequate for all general use, unless you are running extras such as an electric winch, multiple lights etc. My RRC stands out in the open for anything up to four weeks between usage & always fires first time with a perfectly standard battery purchased from the local auto store. Paying extra for a heavy-duty item rarely equates to a proportionally longer service life.

If it's a diesel, get the biggest battery you can fit in the carrier, with the highest CCA figure.

Peter

+1 - we run two 300Tdi D1's. Both have 072 batteries on - one is a Varta Silver - The other a Varta OEM spec, which has more CCA, and slightly more Ah. The OEM one is worth the extra money in my book. CCA's cost money !!

A scrap D1 I bought came with a halfrauds battery on it - lower CCA, and lower Ah than either of the Varta's. Its your money, but I always do as Peter does - biggest that will fit in the carrier.

IME, the reserve is useful in cold weather - which get a lot of, high in the Pennines.

@Brookstain - out of interest, I went to look at the three batteries I mentioned above...

Halfrauds 072 is unspecified Ah, but claimed 510 CCA

Varta E24 is 70 Ah and 630 CCA

Varta GM74-H3R is 74Ah and 680 CCA

All these are the same physical size - I.E. an 072 form factor.

Clearly, there is a significant difference between the halfrauds effort, and the Varta's - especially the GM74 one.

Hope that helps:)

I've used big Bosch Silver batteries on my previous vehicles. Won't fit in a Disco though. The only reason I mention is that they came with a 5-year guarantee from Halfords, versus the 3 year guarantee on cheaper ones. I had a diesel Audi with 230k on the clock that could be hard to start and after just over three years, one of which was 2011 with -17C temperatures, the battery developed a fault. Halfords replaced it without any hassle.

Thanks all, that's great.

I had a look on Halfrauds and for £98 I can get a calcium battery that only has 510 CCA, which like you say is obviously the bare minimum she will need to crank round I guess?

So the HB072, is that the physical size? I guess it's probably best I measure my battery tray and see what I can get away with!

My Dad's always mentioned Varta batteries in the past, so I may have to have a look at them.

What does the reserve capacity mean sorry?

Many thanks all!

To give them their due, I have heard Halfords are really good at replacing faulty batteries and tools etc.

I may have to see what the biggest battery I can get from Halfords is, and see if my Dad can get me some juicy discount.

Tell me to jog on if this is cheeky but...

Does anyone know the maximum size or the size of a Disco 1 battery tray by any chance? Save me waiting until I'm home to measure it - as I'd quite like to order it whilst I'm at work.

Many thanks!

I've actually just been looking on the Tayna website. So the 072 is the best size for my Landy then - that helps thanks.

Just found the below with 1000 marine CCA. Am I right in thinking that marine CCA appear more than they are? I've seen somewhere online saying that 1000 marine CCA is actually about 800 CCA. That being said... the below battery looks quite bloody good!

D2 has a bigger tray than the D1, we have a Varta 110AH and 680 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)
